Help with Hobart Handler 135

I found an older Hobart Handler 135 for a friend that can be bought way in the money. The problem I have found with it is the wire feed speed dial will not control the speed of wire coming out of the gun. It flows out at maximum speed regardless where the dial is set.

What could cause this and what kind of fix would be necessary to get this working correctly again, if that is even possible.

Thanks for any insight.

bad potentiometer under the dial. you could check it with a multi-meter by checking the ohms drop across the outside lugs against the center lug.

Others with better electrical knowledge will chime in a bit later.

Yes do check the speed control wires and pot. make sure it works and is not shorted.
Measure out side legs first then measure center leg to both out side legs. Use ohm meter.
While on center and outside, turn control knob and watch the value change. Should go from high to low or low to high value. the other out side leg will be opposite
If speed pot and wires are good, then the motor drive transistor on the pcb has shorted out.
your can replace the pcb, try to replace the transistor or send the pcb to a pcb repair place and hope they fix it.
