I especially liked the link to Varmint Al's tribute to his Dad. Reminds me of my Grandfather who I was fortunate enough to work with in 1975 when I got my first job in a metal shop (in Regina, thanks Grampa!!). I learned a LOT from my Grandfather.
This stuff really serves to show that just because some great people are not with us anymore does not mean that things we build and our contribution to people doesn't live on!!!

This photo of a Los Angeles City fireman with a back-pack oxy-acetylene cutting torch illustrates the equipment used by LA City and County fire departments in the 1930s and 40s. Prior to the ‘Jaws of Life’ and similar hydraulic rescue equipment (1972), and prior to the development of modern saws and air chisels, these cutting torches were the only tools available for some auto extrications and industrial accidents. Usually, an asbestos blanket would be draped over the victim while a vehicle or machinery was cut away from them.

I agree...very large shop, but there were many others as large maybe even larger. Sad thing is that one day we are going to really miss the plants like this that have gone by the wayside in America
Maybe we should think before sending any more overseas.
Here are some pictures of my father. He passed away 2 years ago. He was a welder in WW II in the navy, and continued his craft when he got home. He retired as a union pipefitter. Sure wish I could work with him today.
It is a small world, I worked for H.C. Price just prior to their buy out. Of all places it was in
IL too!
I can not find a picture but my great uncle was a rig welder, before the new fangled "electric" welding came along....

I was thinking.... that we needed a thread dedicated to old Photographs, (at least 25 or 30 years old), of anything related to welding. This could include shots of work in progress, specific methods, equipment, even steel making/rolling pictures. Maybe one of your father or even yourself on site and outfitted for work (no, not sitting in a bar after work, even if work boots are still on!).
I propose/request, no demand! (will that really make a difference?) one basic rule:
Each Post Must Have One or More Old Pictures and All Pictures Must Be Old! but new to this thread (not already posted in this thread; other threads are ok though) .

From the way she is holding the tourch and the wire in her hand I'd say she was brazing or silver soldering. But that is just my observation.
