    Re: Old Welding-related Pictures

    Oh MAN!!!

Some of those photos are Waaay cool!
The link to the shipyard machine shop was great, as were the pics of the lady welders! Hi girls!

I especially liked the link to Varmint Al's tribute to his Dad. Reminds me of my Grandfather who I was fortunate enough to work with in 1975 when I got my first job in a metal shop (in Regina, thanks Grampa!!). I learned a LOT from my Grandfather.

This stuff really serves to show that just because some great people are not with us anymore does not mean that things we build and our contribution to people doesn't live on!!!

This thread has given me great inspiration, Thanks.

This photo of a Los Angeles City fireman with a back-pack oxy-acetylene cutting torch illustrates the equipment used by LA City and County fire departments in the 1930s and 40s. Prior to the ‘Jaws of Life’ and similar hydraulic rescue equipment (1972), and prior to the development of modern saws and air chisels, these cutting torches were the only tools available for some auto extrications and industrial accidents. Usually, an asbestos blanket would be draped over the victim while a vehicle or machinery was cut away from them.

I agree...very large shop, but there were many others as large maybe even larger. Sad thing is that one day we are going to really miss the plants like this that have gone by the wayside in America
Maybe we should think before sending any more overseas.

I can not find a picture but my great uncle was a rig welder, before the new fangled "electric" welding came along....

    Woo-Woo the welder:

While researching something else, I found this article about a female shipyard welder from WW-II. Well worth the read and watch the video.

I saw this truck and had to pull over so I could post pics in this thread. I think it is a pretty cool oldie. Would be cool to turn into a welding rig.

Maybe one of your father or even yourself on site and outfitted for work (no, not sitting in a bar after work, even if work boots are still on!).

Since I don't have any photographs of my own available, I will start the thread with one borrowed from another site; I might even tell you about it some time! [BTW, everything on that site is in the public domain].

July 1942. Ford plant at Willow Run, Michigan. "Steady of eye and hand, women workers at the great Willow Run bomber plant are among those throughout the country who are relieving serious shortages of skilled workers by doing such semi-skilled jobs as the one here. She's welding parts of the cooling system direct to the supercharger." Medium format negative by Ann Rosener.
From the way she is holding the tourch and the wire in her hand I'd say she was brazing or silver soldering. But that is just my observation.

    Re: Old Welding-related Pictures

I thought there was a thread with pictures of an old plate fab operation but I couldn't find it. Feel free to drag this post there or wherever it may be more appropriate.

I was looking for some old papers today (but not this old) when I ran across this file.
I can dig through it later for more details.
