Re: Home made tools!
I ended up with a whole bunch of 4x36 sanding belts but did not have a sander/grinder to fit them.
I already had a decent older electric motor. Next was a trip to Harbor Freight for their sander and then Tractor Supply for a belt and larger pulley.
The original motor was weak and the sabder only ran at about 1250 rpm. This motor is still only 1/6 HP but runs at 1725 rpm. I put a 4 inch pulley on the motor and left the 1 inch pulley on the arm of the sander.
This should give me 6900 rpm and 1800 fpm on the belt. I can still stop the belt if I push too hard but it is better than before.
Total cost is about $80.

Thanks Terry. I am sure I will come across a better motor in the future. That should make it less likely to stall.

If you are getting by with HF 1/6 HP ANY FHP motor in the future will be miles better.

I replaced the HF 1/6hp motor with a GE 1/6hp motor. I may not sound like it makes sense, but it is a beefier motor and I now have a stand for future expansion.
I have seen plenty of motors on Craigslist for reasonable prices but didnt have the belts at the time.
Getting the belts was the impetus for this project.

Re: Home made tools!
So..... that bolt just threads into the rubber.... or..... don't tell me you welded it to the file
-
Re: Home made tools!
Didn’t know if to use straight or reverse polarity so I threaded it in.

LOL. I was thinking the same thing!
Love to have a file that big just for bragging rights! I bet it eats an eighth off with each stroke.

I bet it takes quite the muscle to power that thing at an 1/8" shaving power per pass

No, but it has gotten dragged out a couple times for other jobs since I made it. I really should paint it just to keep it from getting cut up to build something else...

Re: Home made tools!
You'll be glad when it's still around the next time you need it.
Reds my favorite color (Lincoln) but it would look good in green, easy to find imo.

Re: Home made tools!
I have had Miller and Hobart.
I always want a Lincoln SA200 but never got one.

Re: Home made tools!
Hmmm.... could end up red ( or even black) to match the jack.... although John Deere green would remind me what I built it for...
