So I got my kit. Didn't send me my gaskets though In the meantime i put the cam shaft bearings in and put the cam in, and the gear with the cam plate. Cam is all locked up though. I did lubricate before i assembled. Going to take the cam out tomorrow and see if i half to ream a bearing. Sound like a bad idea? Pistons look good though. The piston pin has a tenth or so play and it just glides in and out. fits the cylinder good too.

I trust you know the engine block-to-front cover plate gets installed before the cam gear but seeing as you didn't get the gasket set it's kind of hard to do so.

On the cam locking up, if the cam went in the block without trouble before installing the gear, my guess is you didn't use the correct thin head bolts to hold the cam retainer plate. The cam gear will contact standard size bolt heads prevent it from turning.Name: 100_0758a.jpg

I did use the correct screws. I should of gotten the hint when I started turning the cam but and the shaft didn't want to turn. I'll take it out and check for burrs in the bearings and hope for the best. Seems I can't do much more then put the valves in til I get my gaskets. Going to order cranks this paycheck too

I got the gaskets today. Reamed out the bearings but the gear side one is still giving me problems. Is there suppose to be a bearing between the gear and the cam plate or plate and block.

    Re: sa200 1979 f163 connecting rods

Nope. No other bearing between cam and thrust plate or plate and gear.

Are you sure the cam is binding at the gear end bearing? Could be a spot at the rear or center bearing just as the cam reaches running position.

Also check to make sure the thrust plate isn't distorted or burred causing the binding.

The thrust plate isn't on. I'm 100% on that bearing. I revered the cam so only would touch the one bearing and it's hard to turn Only had like 10 minutes to work on it today

Then you should be able to see a shiny spot or spots on the bearing that's evidence of the binding.

I don't see any. But it got a little easier to turn. Still takes 2 hands on the gear Using a honer now. Little more and it should be good I hope

No gasket on the cam thrust plate (plate with two bolts) and the block-to-front cover adapter plate gets a gasket that should have come in the gasket kit you received yesterday. However, the adapter plate wouldn't have any effect on the cam.

I did not get a gasket for the timing cover. And I'm sure silicon sealant won't cut it. On the other end of the cam gets a plug of some sort? Or the round fabric like gasket blocked off by the motor plate

The cam bearing bore on the other end of the block gets a welch type plug (kind of like a soft plug) and if the kit didn't include a "timing cover set", you'll need to get one. Fel Pro part number TCS5418.

    Re: sa200 1979 f163 connecting rods

I'm going to call the kit supplier and figure out what happen to the one i bought. It was a Full gasket set. Apparently not full when they shipped it. Right above cam hole (gen side) theres a hole that goes into the engine block water jacket. Would this be for a sensor or a plug. I want to put a oil pressure, water temp gauge in and was wondering if i could use that hole for a temp gauge switch. I'm ordering connecting rods tomorrow, f226d400 to match my 50/50 tang bearing set. Then I'll have to find a new caliper to measure the bushing i need.

Ok. Then I got a bit of research to figure out what goes in there. Today gonna get some more work on timing gears and work on cam shaft and valves tappers ect

Are you saying you're not going to use adapter plate and timing gear housing gaskets but rather just use a silicone sealer?

Do you have the screen that goes over that oil pump pick-up?

No no no. I'm using sealant between adapter plate and block and buy the timing gasket. And I do have the screen. Took it off to clean up the oil pump before I put it in for good. I got the seal and rear sealer block in. Motor plate on and almost ready enough to attach to the generator so it stops looking like a locomotive and I can start doing some wiring and put lifters gov carb starter back in. Still don't have the voltage reg for the alternator or a gas tank. Also gonna need oil and air filter kit. Plugs. Probably missing a few things off the top of my head. Have it written down

I got the motor mounted to the generator now. Going to get the gasket for the timing cover at napa tomorrow. trying to get the valves installed. Going to have to make up a tool to compress the springs. My two spring compressors wont work (ment for ohv). Then I'm gonna clean up the oil filter put her in, along with the govnr, alternator and water pump. All of a sudden its starting to look like something. not to mention how much less cluttered the floor is.

Make it easy on yourself and pick up one of these (or similar design) small engine valve spring compressor.

    Re: sa200 1979 f163 connecting rods

So the connecting rods came in today. Only one slight slight problem. 3 are tanged on one side and the fourth is tanged on the other all f226d400. 3 are from f163 and the 4th is from f227? not sure if this makes a problem or not. Have to order new bearings or return the one rod.

    3 Left and 1 right.
