Re: Bryn Athyn Cathedral ( pict heavy)

Thanks Steve. I made a special point of going today to join the tour so I could get picts. Last year I took the other camera and none of the interior picts came out at all. I think a coffee table book of the metal work, stone work and wood work ( 3 volumes ) would sell really well to guys who love to work in those materials.

Supposedly the college and church have a bunch of original guash drawings that were made for some of the metal work, so the workmen had an idea what the designer, Parke Edwards, was looking for. The drawings not only show the lines of the work, but the guash shows the texture and marking Edwards was trying to achieve. Edwards studied for a while under Samuel Yellin, who is famous for the iron work at YAle, The National Cathedral and other places. Some think Edwards work exceeds Yellin's since Yellin's work looks the same pretty much where ever he did it. Edwards work here has it's own distinct style.

I located a link that covers some info on the metal work at the cathedral.

    Again, bada$$ pics Doug.

Gotta get back out in the shop & forging. Machine jobs have kept me quite busy the last several months & although I can't complain about the work, I've had little time for much else lately.

Hopefully soon ill have some time. I'm gonna have to get some Monel & mess around with it. I think they have it at the scrapyard. Ill have to do some asking around.

    GREAT thread Doug!!!!

Per the cathedral site, other workmen at the time were overheard to comment about how it was too bad the scrollwork didn't match more closely.

By design, those scrolls are subtly different in the way they terminate. More of not same.

Class opted to continue working at the forge today vs going back to see the cathedral, so no more current picts. I was able to dig up a few I took last year of the tower however.
