Make your own Air compressor hose?
I need a small section of air compressor hose so I can run another filter off the back of the machine to a filter then to my hose. I don't want to have both directly on the back of the machine with a chance to break.
Does harbor freight sell everything I need to customize my own hose ? Or is there a place that sells them in 6" or 8" sections?

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
Any company that crimp hydraulic hoses almost always have pneumatic hoses as well. They can make you a hose any length you whish. A hose with crimped connections is the most durable IMHO.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
Gamble, what size and length hose do you need? I have the tool to put these clamps on, I might be able to help. Also, what kind of fittings do you want on it? I should have them also. Let me know.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
There are sources that sell compressed air hoses by the foot, fittings and clamps. Home Depot and Lowes stock fittings and clamps, individually.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
I've found it cheaper to just by ready-made hoses. The last time I had a shop put an end on, it cost almost as much as buying a new 50' hose.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
Ive never bought a new air hose in 50 years. There is so much good air hose laying around for free or almost free. Any how the barbed fittings, the crimp cups and the crimping tool can all be had at your local welding store. All fairly inexpensive Mac

Like 6 or 8 inches. I need 3 of them. One for each plasma cutter. Fittings...umm female on all ends I think. I'll have to check.

I didn't see them at home depot, but then again I don't know what it looks like. Got a link or anything with pictures of the tool?

you should check out your local NAPA parts house. I know the last two NAPA's I have dealt with build hoses.

Hose barb end and 1/4" NPT fittings male or female ends, whatever you want.
and you can buy hose by the foot like fuel line, or clear braided line.
Plus hose clamps
Any auto parts or good hardware store will have this stuff.
Home Depot will have those fittings with all the brass plumbing fittings

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
I use aeroquipe or russell braided line racing AN hose and use the AN fittings and adapters. I have one from my compressor to the regulator for many many years and no problems. I have a lot of this stuff laying around from my blown big block chevy jet boat.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
Gamble - Harbor Freight sells odd lengths of air hose, I think 3' is the smallest but may be cheaper than anything you can make yourself.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
I could not justify it dollarwise, but I bought the $30 crimper and $10 pack of ferrules from McMaster Carr and I now make my own, because I just wanted to. I put a piece of heat shrink over the connection and it looks almost professional.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
I don't want to use barb fittings. AN fittings are too pricey. What does the crimper look like?

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
Dunno if you are using 1/4" hose or 3/8"
Tru-Flate makes a screw type replacement end though. I have used them on a lot of hoses back in the days of doing air compressor maintenance for a LARGE commercial tire operation.
Dunno if these are right for your application but it is a heck of a price. http://store.harryepstein.com/cp/TruFlate/22-323.html

I love these things. No sharp edges and can be re-used. The only tools needed are a couple of wrenches and a sharp knife. The road service guys loved them because they could patch a hose in the field whenever the ends blistered.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
They have hose all size fittings and end barbs like below at any industrial supply, auto stores and some hardware stores. Just make sure the one you get is strong enough for the pressure.

Professional crimp fittings ARE hose barbs. The crimp ferrule is just an alternate way or using a 'hose clamp'.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
In case anyone does not know this. It is an OSHA violation for an air hose to have fittings held in place by anything other than a smooth crimp type clamp, or smooth compression style nuts. The old trick of using a worm drive automotive hose clamp has been outlawed for a long time in the workplace. The reason is that in the event the hose barb comes out of the hose you don't want a "snake" with a sharp tooth flailing around cutting somebody's eyeball out.
What you do in your own home where you are the sole user is up to you I guess. But if the place of your employment has any compressed air hoses "improvised" with worm drive clamps on them, better get them off. For safety's sake.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
Pushlock fittings work surprisingly well and the hose is very good quality. It holds up to whatever other chemicals you have in your shop like oil. No tools are necessary other than your two hands and a bit of soapy water. They are rated for 300 psi and generally hold up well for 10 years or more. Get a bit of oil on a harbor freight air hose and you have a swollen mess within one year.
McMaster has them under push-on hose and fittings, it's $1.50 a foot for the hose and $8 for 5 fittings with pipe thread on them.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
You can get 6 footers for $14 shipped. I would just buy one and get the barbed fittings to make the others and cut where needed but their cheap enough to just buy 3.

Re: Make your own Air compressor hose?
Two options:
1. Google search for "whip hose." These are short (2-6 foot) hoses meant to be permanently attached to the tool, with the quick connector at the end of the 'whip.' This gets as much of the heavy stuff off the inlet of the tool for tools which have a lot of vibration (air hammers, etc.), which could, theoretically, break the inlet of the tool, if you have too much weight attached right at the inlet (like a pressure regulator or oiler).
2. Go to a place which makes hydraulic hose (just about every city has at least one). They can fabricate any length or type of hose with just about any connector you can imagine.
