    Hey farmersamm - I Bought A Lincoln!

That's right - I actually BOUGHT a Lincoln. No freebe here and it's really a basket case. I'm considering this a 'rescue mission' and it's going to take a whole lot of TLC to keep it from remaining a pile of scrap metal.

Got if for double digit $$, a little bartering and a 1-1/2hr road trip Wednesday morning before work.

These are two of the photos the seller sent me early in the negotiations. He had attempted to get it running but it's just too rough at this point for him to have been successful. Stated all he got it to do is fire once.

At least this one came with an original style gas tank unlike the Roughneck 2E. Obviously this one's not the original but it's in good shape so that's a big plus.

Judy had dinner ready so I'll start by checking the transformer tap readings in the morning and continue the disassembly. Gonna be an interesting one. If anyone has or knows of a unit that can be used for parts, let me know. I may be needing it.

    Thanks for looking.

Number 1: You must have too much time, I'll gladly pay the postage if you send me your extra....
Number 2: Me thinks something is amiss with farmersamm, I haven't noticed him on here. YOUR post will certainly bring him to the surface if he is just napping, I hope all is well with him, maybe Spring is in the air, and the seeds must be planted!

P.S. The last post I find is aprox. 5/17, come out, come out, where are you?

Re: Hey farmersamm - I Bought A Lincoln!

I wish - on the too much time. Actually tessdad, I have too many projects because I just can't say no. I'm not too sure about this one though as it's pretty rough. The photos don't really tell all.

I was thinking the same of Sam too but choose to figure he's too busy with Spring things as you've pointed out. I too hope all is well. Anybody got a phone number for him?

Re: Hey farmersamm - I Bought A Lincoln!

Made a little progress today starting with a good washing with the pressure washer and then disassembly. Not quite sure how the seller got the engine to "fire once" as I found the mag coil primary wire broken. Perhaps that's when he decided to give up the fight and try to sell it. I got a new wire soldered in place, everything back together and sparking as it should. Sorry I didn't take a photos of the session as I was working outside on the shop apron and dodging rain drops (shop is too full for some reason).

Anyway, the carb is still apart and soaking so I had to incorporate a Brake-Kleen 'injection system' and she fired right off on the first pull. Problem with that type system is it's difficult to maintain a steady engine speed but it works to get things checked out.

Back inside the shop after the pressure wash bath and following the 'test firing'.

Both brushes were stuck in their holders due to rust buildup but they pushed out without too much effort and the rust cleaned right up. Checked out the rotor while the brushes were out and all is well there so things are looking better all the time.

Slip rings and all connections cleaned up (marks on rings are brush stains not cracks), brushes free up and reinstalled back in place.

More disassembly and the stator all checked out OK. One field voltage capacitor tested questionable and I'm still concerned about that spot on the reactor even though it didn't show any short to ground.

Considering the successful engine fire test and positive electrical tests so far, I can now justify investing in the parts required to get the engine back to 100% (about $60) and proceed from there with the final welder/generator testing.

Manual start only David. I just have the filler panel removed (see 1st photo in post #1). Would be nice to add electric start though.

Re: Hey farmersamm - I Bought A Lincoln!

Well all the kids and grand kids headed back to San Antonio this afternoon so I headed for the shop to finish tearing the unit down in preparation for sand blasting. I discovered one of the reactor mount bolts was broken off the other day so we got that taklen care of too. Got all the engine parts ordered yesterday that I'll need to bring that up to snuff and once there in I'll get back at it.

Got that smashed in intake grill straightened out the best I could on Saturday too.

Still waiting for the engine parts to arrive so I tackled the reactor this afternoon to get it fixed up in advance of putting everything back together after a media blasting and new paint job.

The outer three damaged reactor laminations 'before'.

Ya know, I'm one of those guys that can fab just about anything, But I am the only guy that can tune up a chevy 350 and it will never start again. I can rebuild a steam turbine or a 4 shaft gear box, But me and motors just don't get along. Must be my karma or something.

I called Outdoor Distributors yesterday to check on the order as I got an e-mail last week identifying one of the items as back-ordered. I called to see if the BO was going to hold up the entire order and was told no as the warehouse was backed up with getting orders out and it would arrive in time to ship with the rest of the order. Was instructed to call back on Friday for an update if I didn't see it by then.

Minor delay but they're great people there, good prices and responsive. Check them out http://www.outdoordistributors.com/ next time you need any small engine or equipment parts.

Re: Hey farmersamm - I Bought A Lincoln!

    Hey Duane.
I have been thinking about this project of yours!
Those old cast iron block singles where tough motors.
If you want electric start, how about steeling an old Delco starter generator off of an old Simplicity like the 3414 or 3416, 7014 or 7016 Sovereign tractors, or a Cub or something with the same setup you would need the cover and flywheel pulley, the starter bracket, belt and solenoid, the voltage regulator, the key switch, a battery and some cables, all this taken from the donor tractor.
    Could work!

The picture below was a 7016 that I restored.
You can just see the starter generator sticking out the side from under the hood!

Re: Hey farmersamm - I Bought A Lincoln!

Actually Ken, it's easier than that. If you'll notice in some of the photos, the flywheel is already equipped with a ring gear and the block has the starter mounting bolt holes that hold the current block off cover so the proper 11 tooth starter would just bolt up. A starter button and battery and we'd be off and running. The current recoil starter would stay in place as back up.

Been thinking about it since David R brought up the subject in post #8

Really nice looking restoration on that Simplicity.

    Yeah!
Noticed that after I posted that.
I took a couple of your pics and blew them up for a better look and said "DOH"

You have a newer motor than the one in my old Simple tractor, after the change from the old to new type starter system!

Re: Hey farmersamm - I Bought A Lincoln!

Well it's now obvious there was a little misunderstnding earlier in the week when I spoke to Outdoor Distributors on my parts order. The back-order notice I received on 5/27 listed one part which has since been received at their location but it turns out there is another one as well that isn't scheduled for production release by B&S until 6/16 which would hold the entire order up until after then IF the part does in fact ship from B&S as scheduled.

So, for a small additional shiping fee the order will be released this afternoon for shiping but probably won't go out now until Monday and the back-ordered part will ship out as soon as it comes in. Both the first and now current part aren't critical to the restoration but rather desired for a better one so I'll be able to move forward and get things back together hopefully at some point in the next week or so to see if she works OK.

A special thanks to Steve at OD for his help on getting to the bottom of matter.

Had a chance to get back to work on the unit today so here's a few posts to bring the project up to date.

Broke out the media blaster and went to work on the control panel and housing base/back. A few pieces blasted and ready for a little repair.
