Temporary Welding curtain for garage shop

Had and idea over the weekend for a more convienent way to use the welding curtain in my home shop.

I simply put some hooks up across the opening of the garage door and hung 4' sections of welding curtain from them. The sections are joined by velco in to spots on each curtain. The resulting curtain doesn't flap too much in the breeze, yet lets plenty of air in, whic still protecting casual passersby from arc light.

A side benefit was the curtain cuts down on the direct sunlight blazing into the garage until 11am or so.

I ordered the curtain sections from my local welding supplier. You can see in the photo that I also have a portable screen made from sch 40 1.5" PVC. That needs some modifications, but it's collapsable and pretty convienent. I'm going to cut it down to fit the curtain section better, and add some sand to the 'feet' to make it more stable.

The curtain is vinyl, and comes in lots of colors. I think my LWS sourced it from a company named King; but there are lots of people making it. A quick search on welding curtain yielded this company:

Your LWS can probably custom order any size you want. I ordered several 4'x6' panels; as I think this size is most convienent.

Keep in mind that these type screens aren't fireproof; they will melt if exposed to heavy grinding sparks or spatter. But they're good for protecting the innocent bystanders from incidental UV exposure. If I had people wandering up to watch, I'd put up warning signs about not watching the pretty light.

Actually, once I put the velcro on, the curtain hardly moves. I thought this would work better than the old setup, as there's much more room to work in the shop now. If I need to have something sticking out into the driveway, I can just put up a couple sections of the screen.

Great idea A_DAB_will_do  but there's something wrong with your shop. It's too CLEAN!:D

:D It's that clean because I spent the morning putting things back in order. I shoulda taken a before and after photo.

I wish I had the luxury of spilling out into the driveway and yard, but I live in a sub with picky neighbors. I'm just glad nobody has complained about the work truck that's always parked out front. It's too big to fit in the garage.

I also hate bringing metal chips and slag into the house, so I keep the floor pretty clean. I keep catching myself walking barefoot out into the garage/shop area to get some little thing. If the floor isn't clean, I feel like I've wandered into the middle of a minefield...

I bought them 3 years ago. 6 panels, plus some other stuff. Wasn't cheap, they were made to order sizes. The edges are all sewn over and grommets were put in. I'm guessing they were $10-20 each.

Best thing to do is call your LWS and get a price quote. I'm headed to the LWS today. I'll see if he can pull up the costs for me again...

Glad to be of assistance. Northern in FL is just down the road from my shop and they have of good welding supplies. That even my LWS doesn't stock.
