I'm now using a private labelled 3/32" arc rod to weld tabs on springs that I buy at Praxair
(no not trailers)
Based on this info in the video above, plus the same that Jody has mentioned as well as the rod compositions
It's possible I can get a better priced generic rod of 312 stainless if I can find one.
My LWS guy is useless
I've looked at the rod websites, but only found it in TIG rods, not Arc/stick/smaw
Anyone know a Source??

Here's another question, is 312 available as a mig wire ?
I've never seen it but you might be able to use 309L if it meets your strength requirements.

If it helps you find it, Super Missle Weld rod (SMW) is practically the same thing as 312
