I'd like to know which laser you bought and what you'll be cutting, thanks
    Richard,

Thanks. Yes, it is a miller 211. I've also have an Everlast 256 Tig/Stick/Plasma machine, though the plasma isn't working. One of these days I need to get that fixed.

The laser is a DIY contraption. http://www.lasersaur.com/. I bought it used from a hacker space out in El Paso Texas last July. I have very limited space, so its been riding around in my van since then. My van is my mobile storage unit

As to what I will cut on it, mostly thin plastic and plywood. I've used one at our local hacker space to make storage boxes, small gifts etc. Once I get it up and running again, I'll figure out what I can make with it. Its kind of like a welding machine, I bought that out of a vague desire to stick bits of metal together. It greatly expands what I can do.

I have no illusions about my welding abilities. I stay well away from anything structural. Still, its fun, and slowly I get better better at it. I'm in awe of the welders that produce the beautiful welds here. I had no idea of the skill involved until I tried to do it myself and failed.

I got started by taking a continuing education class at a local community college,5 plus years ago. They started with stick, then in a later course moved on to TIG and MIG. I weld it my garage, so I gravitated to TIG because I was less likely to burn the house down!

Yep, sounds like a job for flame straightening.

Virgil posted a good video of the process a while ago.

    p4nh4ndle,

Thank you for that. I wish I had watched that before I put the top on. The frame warped a bit during welding. I could have probably straightened it. I'll know for my next project, whatever that may be. Its amazing how much bend they put in the beams.

Should I maybe just do a build thread?
I did one for my positioner and it was lost in the great wipeout of 2018.

Yes, a build thread would be good.
I've been searching all over for that positioner build thread, do you still have any pictures. I almost have all the parts needed to build one. It would be great if you could repost some of the pictures.
Did yours use a dart dc motor controller with a 13 rpm gearmotor?

Keep up the good work, your pictures are great.

mine was a 16rpm and then a 3:1 on gear reduction. I think 13 would be just fine. Looks like I'll do two threads. Pm me with any questions.

Well, this only involved some soldering, but in light of the day, hopefully you'll cut me some slack. My artistic and romantic quotas, such that they are, have been met for the year.

My mentor made friendship rings for himself, and his girl. A belt, with buckle. Precise like a jeweler might, but his carved from solid silver. After his death, 50 years later she showed them off proudly.

I'm impressed with your work, as I was with his. If you want her to wear it, scale it down.

thanks good accurate mitre bandsaw to thank. I mitre all the joints I can, just to avoid unsightly end caps. The outside edge gets TIG welded so it gives a softer corner, easier to make it look good than MIG.

It's a frame for a 40kw tractor driven generator. Still got the hitch frame to make.

I’m guessing that bench is getting slats instead of a big single plate

Completed this pair of "treating vessels".

Will be used as a prototype and "proof of concept" for a customer involved in food and beverage process.

A couple of other shots of nice welds.

Thanks and no, they're actually bolts to mount and adjust the ("slats" i think you call them) to make a welding table top. There are already 2 mounted on the left and right, i need to go and buy the rest now ...

Re: Show us what you welded today!

One thing I've learned from making stuff is humility. Worked on my table today, trying to flatten out the top. Youtube convinced me its easy. Reality showed me its not. I started with a MAP gas torch, but decided that was not hot enough. With the Oxy torch, I started around the edges and worked towards the bulge in the middle. While I did get rid of some of the bulge, but ended up creating some depressions.

From the bottom, you can see I have quite a bulge to remove. Since its over the cross members, maybe I should just drill some holes in the sheet and plug weld it. I still need to deal with some bulges, but maybe not as much. The top will be be completely covered with a laser cutter, so it not make too huge a difference whether it is dead flat or not. If need be, I'll make leveling mounts for the laser cutter.

For next time, how would a professional fabricator handle welding the sheet to the frame to avoid warping? Plug welds along the cross members from the center out, and then along the outside, working from center to the corners?

    Thanks,
