Made another shop stool.
Not because I needed one, or even waned one, but because I just wanted to weld something. So I decided to make something, that at least potentially could be used.

Wait--you're not finished yet. You still have to put a little shelf underneath to put tools and parts on as you roll around. Nice job!

Well I found the weak area when I broke it haha. No video, sorry. I'd probably have a go pro smashed to bits if I had one in my excavator.

My original plan included more steel on the shank but I got impatient and thought it would be fine. And actually it was, until I used it to clean the dirt out of a stump after I pulled it. I think it twisted and that's what broke it.

Back to the bucket to finish this job

Did it break near the notch at the top of the 3 pieces? Where the top piece extends, unwelded, over the middle piece.

I was gonna mention that,, ha. Wasnt exactly sure on the design but you get to have more fun if you wanna fix it. The shank needs inches or so. They often knife the front edge too.

When I bought this excavator the previous owner had welded the replaceable teeth to the shanks. I have a lot of rock here and soon the teeth were worn down to nubs. Had to cut off the old shanks to install new teeth since it was taking longer and longer to get work done; charging by the hour tends to anger the customer if the equipment works too slow. Replaced the teeth with single tiger teeth on the field of the bucket and double tigers on the outer edge to help save what is left of the side cutters until I get around to hardfacing or replacing them. Took a day and three tanks of O2 and lots of grinding wheels to get the bucket ready. Used 5/32 7018 with lots of pre-heat.

About 99% of my work was all new from drawing with a groups look over your work with best of testing equipment for welding .
When do just repair welding it is enjoyable. Just one guy that comes and say hi and good paint job finish the work.

Dirt work is my favorite vs. welding/fabrication as the machines are air conditioned and heated and to me operating is enjoyable and relaxing. My issues are finding people who won't tear up the machines. A previous dozer "operator" broke 2 windows on the dozer and nearly tore off the rear AC panel running into a tree. Had my son running the dozer for a while, told him to keep the doors closed when clearing trees; he left the door open hit a tree and bent the frame so it won't close properly any longer. I'd do it full time but lots of guys around here have farm machines and willing to work for beer money. Last time I overhauled the dozer tracks it was $25K and I did all the work myself. Haven't priced a new undercarriage lately but imagine its probably doubled from 8 years ago.

Fun is Holiday Inn, hot tub, 20 something etc. That looks like hard work. I just been thru a couple weeks of cut, grind, weld. Got the Mil to run a sander, grinder is next.

Used up a bunch of scraps to make a pull through pig to clean silt out of a couple of culverts. 12 inch plate for 16 inch pipe. It takes a few passes. Then they can shove some 12inch PVC through for a temporary irrigation line to pump liquid poo from the nearby dairy for subsoil injection .

I can't do pictures at present. We built a different sort of device to pull beaver dams out of culverts. Turns out we need a few different sizes, small for small culverts, small & medium for medium culverts. All three sizes for biggest. Mount Tabor has several Otter Creek crossings & one bridge 20 feet above the water. We've trapped beaver, shot beaver, nothing has worked as well as six sticks of dynamite in the beaver lodge.

Around here people have learned to use a 90 degree elbow pointed downward on the upstream side of problem culverts to keep the beavers from damming them. It silences the intake of water and they seem to shy away from the suction... or die.

We just tried that on a smaller brook. 30" culvert on a stream known as the sewer brook. Until 1960 it was the communal septic for the Village of Danby (50 houses). In my childhood it was pretty nasty! 60 years later, no septic. We dredged it a few years ago, I got 20? tandem loads of nice topsoil from it. Beaver have been a big problem in the culvert under Brooklyn Road. We clean it too often. Just tried the inner pipe first time.
