Looks like helium is maybe 10% more efficient at heat transfer. Seems pretty optimistic to try 1"at 115A.
It is not optimum, but the demonstration was that it could be done with the right setup, prep and a skilled Weldor.

Discussed with Wes. Although I suggested a 10% increase in amps as well as a thorough chem etch, he suggested that a chem etch alone may wet the first pass into the root, and keep the face toes clean for the subsequent passes.
    Weld like a "WELDOR", not a wel-"DERR"

Yah just trying to reconcile the posts from Pangea saying he sets the pedal to 175 for everything under 1/2" with 115A on 1". There has to be a limit somewhere.

I have a lot of respect for trying it and posting the etch and destruction result. If the goal is to prove the point though, then the point remains unproven, does it not? I am tempted to get some 1", plug into 120v, and see what the little blue box can do. Not that I am skilled.

It must be hard in the field to tell when something is properly welded. We all thought it looked Ok. If anyone has an interest in seeing it work, it is guys like me with only low amp machines.

The other problem I can see is net heat input might be higher with slow travel causing the part to warp a lot. Maybe not an issue on smaller repairs.

Ok, time for some practice. Not sure I follow on the Chem etch but I will try it at 130 and see what happens. After I practice a bit on half inch anyway...
