Is it my eyes or is that weld across the top where it broke?

Looks to me like the marks that would be left from a loose ball working back and forth for a while.

With the electric cable still attached, it looks like this came apart in the moment he drove something heavy onto the trailer.

    Where are his safety chains?

You're right, just hard to see. So he likely was moving when it came apart.

Had a guy bring me a hitch broken exactly like that, you could see the marks from the loose ball. Told him that he couldn't afford what I would charge, because that was going to be the fee to bump my liability insurance. I told him to go buy a better one and a new ball.

I have no sympathy for anyone towing with a bad connection at the hitch. It needed fixing before it went that long.

I say that, but I'm the one who smashed his van door when a trailer without enough tongue weight popped off the ball. Generator forward, 385 International with loader & scraper behind. I had tongue weight, but very little. Made it 20 miles of very rough gravel road (FR10) then most of a mile of severely potholed private road.

Not to mention the road signs he stole the sign posts from. That also might cause a wreck.

No Darwin Award for this guy, he's going to take smart people out of the gene pool.

    Re: Trailer fail pics

You pass a whole series of tests to get a CDL driver's license. Towing, and hitch requirements are pretty complicated for even lighter trailers. I see these Walmart ball mounts towing 15000 LB trailers all the time. There should be some requirement that you understand trailering.

I have a good friend uses a 1/2 ton pickup to tow a 10,000 LB tractor plus a 4500 LB trailer. Plain old ball mount, and he loads 100% of the tractor forward of the trailer axles. Drives around like a boat that won't come up on plane. Seth owed him a thank you once, bought him a load equalizing hitch. He won't use it.

By far, the builder is the weakest link.

This is the opposite of fail, really, but interesting. Anyway, whatever kind of hitch this guy has, I want one.
