I picked up a nice airbrush at auction once for $5. Auctioneer's assistant held it up and said he thought it was some kind of dental equipment. He didn't know what it was. Worked out well for me.

I’ve been doing most of my welding on the floor or using a 2’x2’ scrap of 1/4in plate on a black and decker folding table. But it’s time for an upgrade! I just brought home a 40”x96” piece of 1” plate. (It was free, but I had to cut it down from an 18ft piece with a Milwaukee cold saw - didn’t go super well.) I got to try out the new SSQA on my tractor with a set of forks and was impressed - huge improvement in ease and capacity over the old bucket forks:






Most of the materials are surplus/leftovers. Here’s the plan:



I was planning to use some 6in formed angle that I have under the table to stiffen it, but it turns out they aren’t super straight. Probably overkill anyway. (If there is such a thing!) This version uses some very straight 2.5x0.5 cold rolled bar I have that seems a little light, but the price is right, it’s only a 6ft span and I hope it’s enough to help with any potential sag. Thoughts?

If worried about sag why not build an adjustable truss rod or 2?
Bolting the top to the table is always less risk of warping than welding it, even with minimal but enough welding.

My brother has a welding table around that size. His has 3” channel at the top and bottom, but nothing in between. It’s a nice setup.

3in channel running right under the plate, where I drew the 0.5x2.5 bar? And at the bottom, where my lower shelf is? I debated one shelf vs two. I’ll probably throw scraps/cutoffs on the lower one and clamps/grinders(?) on the upper. But I debated only doing one. I have a 5ft wide piece of flattened expanded that is big enough for two so that was the deciding factor so far. I think I have some 3in channel leftover from trailer ramps so I’ll think about that under the top instead of the bar - might be a little stiffer.

I have a 3/4" by 48x96 table. There is no sag in it. The only reason it is not straight is the previous owners were beating on it. I have about the same spacing for legs you have except for the diagonals you see in the pic attached The legs on mine are made from 2x4 channel doubled up.

In my opinion, a 1" top is not going to sag by itself with just the four legs in that span. But that also depends upon what you are placing upon it. Heavy machinery, sure. Typical shop welding you see on here, I doubt it.

Agreed. I've put over 2000 pounds (on a pallet so under 16 sq ft footprint )on a 3/4" 8'x4' table with NO bracing.

That’s good to know. I won’t sweat it until a problem arises. Nothing on my little kubota is heavy enough for the table to even notice and I can’t afford to build anything that would weigh enough to be a problem!

I was thinking along the same lines... one inch material is pretty strong so basically anything under it for support in the center should make it bullet proof. I have mixed feelings about the dual shelves. I have 2 under one side of mine, and they both get used, but it makes it more awkward to get things in and out. You're going to be getting down on your knees for that bottom shelf, so your age may help determine how often you want to be down there. If I was going to do it again, it might just be a single shelf slightly below knee height.

One advantage to not having shelves under the table is welder storage.
I roll my Miller 252 under the table when not in use.

So if I buy the rough ones off my Craig's list for a grand, can I still turn a healthy profit on the resale with improvements?? We were talking about the potential for that style sagging in the center... it seems to me tying the legs together close to the bottom would add strength as well and wouldn't require as much steel as a built frame.

As well as creating a shelf support.

And yeah I picked up about $1400 after allowing for a few improvements and trucking.

I bought this last night for a new welding table build. It’s quite a distance away so I will need to get it shipped to my friends warehouse in Vancouver and worry about getting it home later.

It weighs about 800 pounds and is in a residential area with no forklifts around.
