A tip I learned from others... sometimes a Google search including the words Welding Web works better than the site's own search...

    Re: Welding table picture thread

I started a specific gardening project early in 2020,, and that was the last time my welding table was cleared off.
Then, during COVID, I did some restoration on a pickup,, more "stuff" on the welding table,, (LOTS of vehicle cleaning supplies)

This week, I decided that the welding table was gonna get cleaned off,, I got down to bare metal today.

The table is 72" X 72", double 1/4" thick steel sheet. and it is 28" high, which is perfect for me.
I got it 22 years ago, the previous owner built it ~15 years prior to that.

    I also have a 60" X 60" table, and a 48" X 60",, all three came from the same guy.

If the weather stays nice, hopefully I will finish cleaning off the other two tables next week.
(the other two are "project" workbenches,, not used for welding, vises, and two large toolboxes,, etc.)

A welding table can sure accumulate remnants of other projects in a hurry!! LOL!!

I still weld up lots of smaller parts with them clamped to the top of my post vice. Sometimes it's really handy being able to walk around the part as you weld...

It would appear the older I get, the more important it is to be able to work in a comfortable position.

I purchased a used optometrist's instrument table for $25cdn and upgraded the casters.

    Re: Welding table picture thread

    How dumb is this idea:

My current welding table is a 40" x 28" sheet of 1/8" steel on a rolling platform. The platform is plenty solid but I would like a thicker top. Let's say I find a slab of 1/2" +/- steel of the appropriate size - can I tack it to the existing (relatively flat) 1/8" top without any unforeseen issues?

    And...

I'd like to try some clamp fixtures and see if they come in handy for the hobby work I do. I don't want (and don't think I have the horsepower/proper tools) to drill an entire 2 x 2 pattern. But a few holes here and there to clamp things more in the center instead of at the edges (the only place my clamps can be used currently).

Just another Shootr's scotch and cigar rambling...

Not dumb at all... the propensity to warp will increase with the amount of heat used. Use short tacks, hop around lots and stop for the occasional shot and you should be good. Chemically speaking, alcohol really is a solution...

Tack it on and leave overhangs of 4 inches and it would be dandy for use with conventional clamps.

There is nothing wrong with all that stuff but I dont have it. Its not a bad thing just doesnt help me a lot and trade most of it for some common Cclamps and 11R. A couple pipe clamps that can live in the corner. A guy is already limited for garage space needs each piuece to work,, the bench is a place we do welding but it is also a common bench. I been at this a while, dont have a fixture bench.

    Shootr,
If you do decide to put a larger sheet on this table, lay out the pattern for the 2x2 or 4x4 and maybe just drill a few holes on that pattern in the middle somewhere. You don't have to drill all the holes at once. Drill a half dozen or so holes. Use the table and see how you like it. Heck, set a goal of 4-6 holes a week.

I didn't have a mag drill when I built my first fixture table.

I purchased a cheap used Ryobi table top drill press for $20 and removed the adjustable height table and rotated the drill head motor 180°

This allowed me to utilize two c clamps and a 4 foot section of 3"
channel to clamp the drill press base to the new table for drilling.

My pics are somewhere on this site

    Re: Welding table picture thread

I drilled 3 holes in mine for a pipe vise I moved. I have used 1 since and drill 2 others in the extension. They are for specific jobs, one being golf cart and small tire changes. Most of the work is clamping one simple piece to another. The things I collect for it reside on the scrap steel shelf, common coupons and clips to make clamp up jigs.
I actually like it better than the systems, it all just gets tossed back on the shelf and in the bolt bin, don't have to keep track of special parts and tools. If we build or wanna save it have shelf for custom and pullers, try to spray it yellow if we can. Used one off the shelf yesterday.

    Re: Welding table picture thread

If I were to build a "clamp plate",, what would be the ideal thickness (A36) ??

I have nice sized pieces of 1/2X12" bar,, 3/4X10" bar and 1X8" bar,, all various lengths.

If I make one, I would probably attach it to my 6X6 foot weld table, at one corner.
The table could be an extension to the clamp table,, and a tool holder,, rather than chasing the stuff laying on the floor.

Is 1" a good fixture hole size?? Too, big, too small??

I can drill 1" diameter holes, and I have 25mm cold rolled that could be used for the clamp extension.

How much chamfer on the holes??

    Re: Welding table picture thread

Another option , rather than drill holes,
use the CNC torch, cut the pattern of holes in TWO plates,,

With the plates spaced apart, weld a piece of mechanical tube between the two plates at each hole location

The CNC torch would produce a very accurate pattern,,

Two plates spaced a couple inches apart by tubes would be very rigid,,

I could even use 1.50" ID tube as the clamping locations, I have the the matching bar to fit that tube.

My ideal clamp plate is 1/2 or so and a square corner with overhang. Corner of the bench. So it can be clamped both directions.

When I built my welding table, Plan A was to poke a bunch of holes in it. When I found out the top was too hard to drill (haven't tried it with an annular cutter yet though...) I went to Plan B and just put some holes in the frame around the outside. I really like this small version that Lis posted for a couple reasons. 1) it's small enough to keep cleared off and will aid in setup for either a small project or one corner of a project at a time, which leads me to 2) with the infinite height adjustment, it can tuck up beside my larger welding table to hold the weight of larger projects. I might have to copy this some day. I was thinking something similar with the cast grates out of my sow crates, but I think the cast would be too easy to break, and the oblong holes wouldn't be as good at holding a project in it's proper position.

    Re: Welding table picture thread

Jason from Fireball Tools did a video about hole sizes and some advantages and disadvantages of each.
Granted, he is trying to sell his product, so take some of it with a grain of salt.
It will really boil down to how you use the table and how much force you need.
