I thought it would be a good idea for the ground clamp but I’ve never used it. For my piddly little projects I like to use my Magswitch ground and place it close to my weld.

Gotcha.... I was thinking a couple of flat iron tabs with no paint for the same reason... my old table had angle iron for the frame so that was convenient for the ground as well.

Came out at 39" tall, very comfortable for me standing. I can sit up close from any of the other three sides. Hitch vise mount - good to go. Electrical - good to go.

But as for the electrical.... code won't let you have romex under 7 foot off the floor around here and a few other things... but hey!!! as long as it works.. you're good!!!

The whole thing "could" be a lot sturdier for anyone doing serious sized work, but it's certainly a good starting point for anyone at the hobby/light repair level. I was a little surprised he demonstrated using it without attachments, clamps or fixtures. I would think the only reason for building a slat type table would be so you could.

I think I would have center mounted that vise mount so that you could hook up to your tow vehicle easier.

I had 3x80 pound cast iron tractor suitcase weights in the bed (close to the tailgate) and it’s hopeless in the snow.

Plus the azz end looked like it was overloaded. Maybe I’ll get a Sooter Duty or equivalent like the big boys some day.

LOL!!!! My PowerSmoke did pretty good this morning yeah the brakes are kinda worthless but with the front hubs locked in at least I have some pull when going around corners..as long as I keep on the go pedal

This one has been a long time coming. My old welding table for the last 40 years has been pretty much a chunk of scrap iron with a 3/8 top (which was an improvement over the rusty piece of sheet metal it replaced). It was time for a new one so when I spotted this 2" thick piece of odd shaped steel at a farm auction, I knew exactly what I was going to do with it. I haven't done the math, but the auctioneer said it was 600 lbs before the corner was cut out. Yukon liked it anyway


Plan A was to drill and tap it from underneath so I could bolt it to a frame, with some threaded 5/8 holes in the top for fixtures. After I discovered that I couldn't drill it with a brand new Cobalt or Zirconium Nitride bit, I reverted to several plan B,C & D's in the key of F. Solution was to make a heavy angle iron frame around the outside of the slab to "contain" it and provide a location that could be drilled for attachments. Between having castors on one end, and upright receiver holes on one side, I had managed to design a table with 4 unequal length legs. I also discovered that I needed an engine hoist just to move it around due to the sheer mass. The castors were bolted on in case I need to change them some day...

I have incorporated many ideas contained in this thread, and have been heavily influenced by Lisle 2323's immaculate shop so I've been trying to get things organized into something that didn't look like my usual pile of junk. My designs tend to be very blocky and utilitarian, but solid. I've made some additions for this one to date, and have some more ideas I want to incorporate down the road including another stand for the chop saw and hand shear... maybe the table saw as well, but I'm leary about mixing welding sparks and sawdust. So far I've managed to include a few nice options including dual drink holders.

The long angle iron can be bolted in numerous places to hold attachments in the center of the table.... the short one can be used along the side to hold projects at a 90 degree, or on the short upright surface as a clamping location....also provides a good spot for one of my Rail Road anvils....

Yes, I've been busy, and I may have went a little over the top with the art work.... Yes, I know I'll end up grinding off the paint, but it can't be any harder than rust and the mill scale on that steel is the thickest and nastiest I've ever seen. Just got a little homesick for 70's van murals... I've barely touched the airbrush for 40 yrs. The cutting grid is reversible to a flat side if I get tired of dropping wrenches down the slats. There is some 1/8" plate below it to catch the slag that I'll likely cover with a thin layer of kitty litter when it's in use....

LOL... knew you were going to ask about that. Not yet... maybe slap a cheap 12 volt transformer under there some day. Right now I kinda like being able to move it where ever I want. I'd like to add plugins to one leg at some point as well. Some PSA style metal art needs to get worked in somewhere too... just not sure exactly where yet...

I am thoroughly impressed!! You sure put a pile of thought into that 2” table. I particularly like the “save” integrating the slatted/flat area in the corner.

And love the airbrush work. I’ll bet your 70’s van had a waterbed in it. Lol.

With the table extensions out can you easily lift the end to move it around?

Les, Your table has a whole lot going on, all of it great! I used the same wheels on my hydraulic press. I did the van stuff in the seventies, but no mural.

In the 70's I was a broke college kid. I fixed other murals, but I drove a beat up Comet with an itty bitty mural on the glovebox shot with spray bombs.

That table and "easily lift" don't work in the same sentence. My son could bump it off the floor, but I've made enough trips to the chiropractor and had enough hernias fixed to not even try. There's a ramp between the two levels in my shop... I smoked the tires on the quad pulling it up. When the auctioneer said that top was originally 600 lbs, I laughed at him. After moving it around, I'm not laughing at him any more. I'd sure like to know what kind of steel it is though... it's not your regular black iron.

Well here’s a stupid revelation.

Deciding to add a vertical 2” receiver to an existing welding table AND enclosing it in the table leg to hide it is as difficult and time consuming as it sounds.









Thank goodness I wasn’t dealing with a 2” top like whtbarons’s.

Got that right. I'd sure like to know what they cut that corner out with if I couldn't drill it. Must have been a water jet or laser... they did a very nice job. I like your grinder tree... I've been thinking about something like that, but I keep coming back to a stand alone rack on wheels. I want something to hang my hat/helmet on and hold the stinger as well.
