I don't have my grinder handy to measure, but can you put a 5" cutoff on a 4 1/2" angle grinder?

Take the guard off and you can mount an 8" wheel if you want.

thinner the cutting the wheel the better, less metal to throw.

As to putting larger wheels on small grinders, it really works those motors.

They have the rpm, just not the 4hp that the big grinders have.

    And man it it dangerous!!!
Better have side handle, and plenty of ppe on.
I had a 6inch .045 wheel on a 4.5 Dewalt, ( this was the lock on side switch 11,000rpm) it got caught in the square tubing I was cutting, and jerked it right out of my hands.
Right in the last place you want it to go, tore the zipper up and got all tangled up in my carrharts.
I got a few scratches and scrapes, no blood tho.

    Be careful with grinders.
Had a buddy get a 9in Dewalt that jumped out of his hands right into his crotch. over 20 sticthes, and lots of blood.
I'd get you a pic, but the smiley face would cover it all up.
But, you just might have to find out for yourself.

    Be safe.

5 inch cutting wheels fit inside the guard on Metabo 4.5 inch and most others I have used. Check out Norton Blue Fire cutting wheels, long life, cuts fast and fairly cheap.

If it don't fit inside the guard, I ain't using it!!!! I NEVER use the angle grinder without the guard on it. I like all my fingers, face, hands, nuts, and legs just like they are.

That's a good policy with the cut offs at a minimum. I've cut cuffs on gloves, cuffs on coats, my wrist area, meat on the thumbs, butt of my hand, all from quick little coincidental bumps from cut off wheels. It's one thing to burn a little skin off with a grinding wheel but those cut offs are so thin they are quick to get some meat or bone.

i used the 4 1/2" grinder without a guard for many years on shaky hanging scaffolds with no problems but was either very lucky or very dumb. probably a little of both. now that i'm older and a little smarter i never take the guard off. it's there for a reason and if something went bad my employer could use my negligence as a reason not to compensate me for lost time/injuries.
