More volts is better, only problem is the higher the voltage the bigger the cap is going to be for a given number of uf.
If you have the room go for it, welders are hard on caps.

    Re: Miggy Got 'Capped'!

Bumping this thread up, it's great information. I think the caps are weak on my black face 200. It's starts to spatter pretty good on tap 5 and above. Also feels like a huge jump from tap 4 to 5. I have 8 15000uF 45 VDC caps in it. I think they are original, so I'd like to switch out.

Looks like a good Mallory replacement is CGS153U050V4C 15,000uF, 50/65 VDC surge.

Can anyone point me to a supplier for these? Maybe one that is less than $20 each? They don't seem to be available anywhere.

    Thanks for any help!

$20 each isn't that bad and any less is a bonus.

These don't meet your less than $20 each criteria but are the same physical size as the originals.

Do caps go bad from use or simply age?

Duane , can I just swap on 6 of the 20,000 2 inch caps to replace my 8? Would save me $50 doing it that way.

Maybe one of these days I'll pull the wrapper off the old 200 and see what the caps look like.

The logic behind the increased quantity is reducing the filtering requirements (charging/discharging rate or speed) of each unit but I'm sure 6 of the 20k units will work just fine for a long time to come.
