The "Mod-Your-151 How-To Guide" should provide some insight as to whether there are any significant differences between an HF machine and a major brand or not.

My first welder was a used lincoln 120v mig, works great for $200.
My second is a chinese stick/ tig/plasma cutter, works great.

The HF welders need tweaking more than the other chinese machines but you spend less up front. And I had a bit more money to spend , otherwise I would have bought the HF and done the upgrades.

All in all, I would look for a used lincoln first.
But I'm still happy with everything I bought.
I think HF is good for the shrew DIY'er , pro's need heavier duty machines and have to pay for them.
