Does anyone have any safety precautions that can be taken when welding auto body panels near the vehicle's filler neck?

Not to be a smart *** but the first thing that comes to mind is don't.
I admit I'm not the most industrious person when it comes to repairing things when it comes to doing more that I have to. Saying that, I'd be removing the fuel tank and putting it far away.
Remember it's not the fuel but the vapours that'll get 'ya, that and the big bang.....Mike

Do you think a wet rag would be better than keeping the fuel cap on and possibly sealing the fuel tank door with duct tape?
The locations to be welded are the lower rear quarter panel on a Jeep Cherokee and rear wheel well on an F150.

On the Jeep the fuel door is about 6 inches up.

I guess the fact I'm even asking this question means the tank will need to be dropped. Safety first.

I think you are overly worried about it...I would, at most, take the lines off the backside of the inlet and plug them with a rag and then wrap duct tape around that...if there are no vapors present, there can be no fire....

ps...you need to make your pictures smaller....they stick out on the edges of my monitor and catch on things when I scroll down...

This is a video of my friend's muffler shop last year. This is something they do dozens of times a day, but on this occasion, the MIG and fuel didn't go so well together!

Thanks for posting that video. That's a good point and example, If muffler shops had to drop the fuel tank every time the had to work in close proximity to the fuel tank, the labor costs would be excessive. Then again, I'm sure the costs to the shop of this fiasco wasn't cheap.

That's what I'm looking for, a reasonably safe solution.

the muffler shops around here still gas weld when they have to actually weld something. Other than that its 95% bolt on fare.
