Maybe because yours is a pic of the world’s largest REAL anvil…?

Anyone think that crane is a little light if that anvil is solid?

Re: Blacksmithing tools
I sure it is a 100 ton crane.
I would question the trailer I bet CHP would say it was over loaded.

Re: Blacksmithing tools
If the DIY forge burner is not hot enough, get a propane-air TurboTorch,, WAY hotter than the forge burner.
The swirl flame concentrates the oxygen and propane in the center of the burner tip, it is almost like propane-oxygen,,
Here is the #6 tip (I think it is the #6??, it is the biggest one available.) heating TWO steel pins that are 1" in diameter.

Re: Blacksmithing tools
Question: Does mild sheet metal, 24ga or so, benefit from annealing (does it work harden)? I haven't been working/practicing much lately - making 3D life sized faces is my next project. I've been watching lots of videos and got lots of ideas, but nothing as aggressive as I plan on doing. I'll have heat available, but want to use a wood/leather slapper, mallets, and hammers with a shot bag and dollies mostly.
Anyways, I'm sitting on the patio enjoying an adult beverage, a cigar, and the weather - so I figured I'd bug you all.

Mild steel does work harden, just not to the same extent as HCS. Heat does help.

Re: Blacksmithing tools
Speaking of slappers, this is one I made from an old truck leaf spring... way heavier than what you want. A chunk of light spring off a small 70's car would be better suited for your work. When working with sheet metal, think "tappity, tap, tap"... if you're going "bang, bang, bang" you're stretching it and work hardening it too much. As long as you're working with it hot, it should bend easier. Any hardening shouldn't occur until it cools. That being said, unless you are making sharp bends, that thickness should be workable cold.

Not sure about that 'slapper'... seems a bit harsh. I thought those were usually black leather... or maybe fur.

I watched Gene Winfield work with one once and it was amazing how he could move the metal where he wanted. He said his favorite was a homemade one, but on tour he was using one of these from Eastwood.

Professor Hammer markets a heavier version they describe as a slap hammer.

Re: Blacksmithing tools
There's nothing worse than that feeling you get when you know you should have annealed the piece you're working on... and then the steel tears!
"One more hit won't be a problem. I'll anneal it in a minute!"
Ugh!
What kills me is that it's not some complicated process and working the steel while it's hot actually helps you get more movement and better definition. Still, we get in the zone and don't want to break stride.... and end up causing more problems than not.

Re: Blacksmithing tools
Using heat with automotive sheet metal tends to cause warpage and distortion issues that you end up taking out with the hammer and dolly. Probably much less of a problem making sheet metal faces.

Never fear that, my friend. I'm just laying low and trying to recover a bit. These last two years have been interesting, to say the least!
