I wouldn't call it useless... maybe light duty. I'm trying to arrange tools according to the job I expect them to do. Heavy vises on the welding bench, but I have a light 3 inch vice that will end up on the soldering bench (when it gets built) for light work. That could be an application for yours as well.

I can guarantee you your light 3 inch works better than this thing.

Nope. Regular NC thread not Acme. Just not very user friendly.

It was hopeless before I installed the spring.

The bottom screw for securing it to a bench isn't perpendicular in use so doesn't really hold very well. To make it perfect I would have needed to notch the base, bend a bit and reweld.

I relisted it on Marketplace and sold it in an hour for $45 then bought groceries.

I would just buy a length of acme with a matching nut. Actually several nuts so that you will have for other projects.

Yea, 3k is ridiculous. Even though it's in pretty good shape and that price includes the stump with hammer rings, it's still very very ridiculous because that price puts you squarely in the price range of modern, mint condition anvils like the Rathole and such.

It's a nice anvil for its age, sure, but.... it's sure isn't $3000 nice!

Whoever replaced the screw did a pretty decent job, though that "thrust washer" looks like it'll bind more often than not. It needed a new base plate and spring made up for it, but, hey, $40 worth of groceries for a few minutes at the wire wheel and nice oiling? That's a fair trade any day.



I've never seen one of those vises that I thought was worth the trouble. Unless you're doing a lot of really light work, filing small parts, they're just too small. Great for taking to demo's, but even then you seem to always be torquing down on the things.

I never thought of my anvil as a retirement plan, must be the railroad spikes... anyone know the story on that short cast stand beside it? Some kind of round stake holder?

Anvil size/weight has to be one of the most difficult things to determine from photos.

$3000 Cdn = about usd$2300 so depending on actual weight may not be unreasonable for current market values.

Placing an anvil on an undersized stump is just plain good marketing. LOL.

I may have even used similar tactics…

Smiths use drill presses so I'll show the Float Lock drill press vise I picked up today.

The ratchet lock mechanism was stuck but in otherwise good shape. AND the jaws weren't full of errant holes. $25cdn

It cleaned up nice....

Those really are handy on the drill press.

It's funny you show that vintage pic because I was designing a piece of channel just like that to do pretty much exactly the same thing. It's nice to know that great minds really do think alike.

Nope... welcome to our world of tools in Canadian dollars. Anything to do with forging has gone insane since the Forged in Fire series gained popularity on TV.

Looks like a halfway decent design. The side opening will allow you to get larger pieces in and out, so you can make dishes and candle holders. For the majority of the time, the end holes will do well enough for most things. Worth $700? Well, not to me, but I'm poor.

I built my own forge. Its not the best design but it work for now. I used salvaged materials, even the soft firebrick, but i bought the plumbing parts for the burner new. I got the fire crick out of an old pottery kiln i bought for $100. I ended up with a lot of firebrick but i should have kept it a pottery kiln. I bought it thinking i could use it as a forge, until i was advised against it for safety reasons. I will say one thing, that kiln heated up steel faster than my propane forge does. I would switch to electric if it was safe.

Ive built my own also. Not that it really matters but I know I didn’t even make minimum wage considering the time I put into it.

Of course those that know, would argue that me deserving minimum wage might be a bit of a stretch…
