    Utility Trailer

    Hi Everyone,

I've searched all over the web and couldn't find what I was looking for. So here I am.

I currently have a small 4x8 utility trailer that needs an overhaul. It's a deckover, with a plywood deck screwed onto whatever rust there is left. My biggest concern is size of the steel. It has a 1000 lb axle on it, and I would like to keep the weight down. I'm going to do a 2x6 PT deck on it. My question is, will 4x1 1/2x3/16 C-channel be too heavy as the main frame? And I'm wanting to use 1 1/2x1 1/2x3/16 angle for the rest of it. Is this size overkill for a 1000 lb max trailer? I'll upload some drawings soon.

    Thanks,
    Hobbywelder27

I just did a rough guess without getti,g my books out, but if my math is correct you will have about 70lbs in the beams. You could cut them to 10ga. and save 20lbs +/-, but then you will have rust through issues again. You'll be heavier than you need technically, but I like it. Should make a stout little trailer and 30-40 pounds more or less won't likely make or break it for weight.
Yeah, I know, but it'll be ok!
