Retirement? What's that? I vaguely remember hearing rumors about it but I have a feeling I'll never get to experience it.

Yep, I had one of the derailments in my plans - divorced, injured, had to change careers.

Oh well, I'm only 44 and have time to get back on track
And I will get back on track - on the way now

There you go! Way to keep your head up. I'm half your age so I've got a while to go until retirement. I just have to decide what career to get into. But I've been taught that it's important to save money and I'm addicted to it. I think I'll do ok. But who knows what life has in store for me.

Eventually we will get to where robots can fix anything but I don't think it will be in my life time

anyone, including a weldbot can have my job whenever they want it. i'm getting tired. not of welding exactly but of the stupidity that runs unchecked and rampant through the dept. a better suggestion would be to leave the welding alone and send in the managementbots.

Yeah managers tend to be idiots. At least in my experience

middle management is what every collage students dream is now
who need them when a bot can take instructions from the main frame

Where I work, I'm convinced half the managers are already bots disguised as humans. The programmers must have taken cues from Office Space: "I'm also gonna need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday, too. We lost some people this week and uh, we sorta need to play catch up."

Do what I always do, fix someone else's mistakes. Dont care if a human or robot did it. No robot can make a weld repair

This robo-laser burns, rasters, and anodizes. This place reminds me of the scene in Star Wars IV where C3PO/R2D2 were about to be sectioned n evicerated by the evil bot.

Re: what will we do when weldbots take all the jobs

When I first started welding I worked in a pattern shop mostly doing tig welding repairs and mods on the patterns they were making. They were the highest paid blue collar trade in the country. When I left the place in 1987 they were making $28hr. Today pattern makers are almost non existent . There are a few one and 2 man shops around but not many. Their jobs are being done by computer now. They said the same thing we are saying now. They will never be able to replace use with computers. I do believe maintenance welders have a secure trade but all other weld related fields better beware. Look at the pipe liners now. a lot of their welds are being do by machine. yes a guy is still there watching the machine but for how long? Production welders are making next to nothing because a lot of managers are threatening to get robots. Look at a few threads on this site, Micro weld all done by machine. Synergic welding machines being sold at inexpensive prices, one step closer to untrained operators, thus less pay. Bore welding machines cutting the welding time in half the list goes on. I have just finished upgrading all my welders because I had to to compete at a decent hourly rate.

I never admitted here that my first ex wife was a certified welder...Ok, forgive me...Here is a home vid of her wearing her morning welding "mask".

Last I heard she was working in Dubai 200 stories up doing 6G with 1/2" 7018.

Yaknow, they have greatly improved on female robot welders to where they look almost real and weld better...BUT the one thing those robot designers ain't fixed yet is they insist the robogirl welders "Speak".....Jeeeese, who needs that?, Yaknow?....Just weld and cook and clean and look good and shut up!!!!!!!
