Check the white spot inside the copper plate on the left. The white comes from a heat transfer cream.
Hi! I'm new on this forum. I bought a used "hybrid" welder I have to repair. This is a spot welding able to weld in continious with the shield gas (MIG). Manufactured in 83 by: Controlled Systems (now "supported" by AMH). Cannot find my answers at AMH. First I would like to know how it is supposed to work: if I use spot mode, gas solenoid and feed wire are off ? At this time my gas solenoid is always on (spot or mig mode) and feed wire motor always off (motor checked alone is o.k.). One electronic part is missing on the "copper plate" used to mount the output components. I think this part is used to stop the feed motor when overheat appears. It's a "TO-3" mount for transistor. is the missing part a transistor ? The circuit diagram or any appropriate info. would be appreciated. Electronic board is: CS-MIG MK 3 83127. Thanks

AMH couldn't or wouldn't help you?
Who elses name is on the welder.
You might be able to get a manual through them.
If it is a napa welder. they bought them from clore automotive who bought them from controlled systems. Clore might still have some books.
To ccawgc: I asked my questions to AMH but i'm not sure I will get something... "It's very old... no more parts... maybe we have the schematic... will see..." !!! I,m waiting !!! Controlled systems was the manufacturer, Windsor (Ont.) and Detroit written on the nameplate.Don,t know if there is a link with napa. What's "clore automotive"? I began to draw the circuit. Power part is easy; the electronic board is a long job... for me! But I'm not in a hurry with that. Thanks. Strongrock.
here is the front of the welder.
For sure the missing part is not a thermo switch but probably act as. There's three connections on the back of the socket: one goes to the (+) of feed wire motor and board (?), one to the + of the supply and the third to the board (?). Connections seems from origin and not altered. The case connection of this part is isolated with a mica film (case form). Strongrock
Sounds like the missing part is the driver transistor for the motor speed output.
Is that Mallory capacitor in the background, unhooked on purpose?

To bluewelders. You have the eye! This cap. is used for the filtration of the dc supply (just after the bridge) for the control board, and was on test: have to be replaced and the supply is now o.k. About the "transistor", I think it brings a minus to this side (normally pos.) to stop the motor cause the other wire of the motor is directly to minus of the supply...??? The pos wire run from the board to one leg of the missing part directly to the motor. I hope to get some info. from AMH.
It could be the motor brake, to stop the motor from coasting, when the trigger is released.
Usually a relay is used, but a transistor would work,it would have to handle quite a few amps though.
clore automotive used to own century welders before Lincoln electric bought century.
They still make the solar battery chargers. They used to market all kinds of welders to auto supply houses under the supply house name. Some they built and some they brought in from else where.I had a NAPA auto parts welder is my shop That was sold to NAPA by clore and it was built by controlled systems. AMH did not have any parts, but they did offer to repair the pc boards. Because it went through clore they had the service manual.
Some times you have to be a detective to find the history and a source of parts for these welders. Push AMH to look in the archives and see if they will send you the diagrams.
Maybe offer to pay for copying.
ccawgc. You read in in my mind. I send an e-mail to AMH this morning, offering to pay for their service. That's the place where it's supposed to end. I hope they will move... Thanks for the history of clore automotive. Strongrock
I receiced my answers from AMH Canada : a good schematic diagram. So consider this thread over. Thanks. Strongrock
Please forward me the schematic...I am having some issues with my controlled systems mig 160. Thanks
I also have one of these welders. I would be very grateful if you could pass alone any info on it. And if you happen to have a photo of the inside cover that would be great. I have been going crazy trying to find info on it.
Thanks
Darryl
I am tired of Ketchup, I want the Gravy...
I have the schematics...I also have one of these machines..i am having a difficult time uploading the pdf,s...Email me and i will send them...muskokamees@gmail.com
This is page 1 of 3..i hope it helps...If you have one of these machines to sell..i am interested...
I know itès been a while but I have a Controlled Systems SAM mig I would consider selling. Everything works as it should. The reason for selling is size. I am only a hobbyist but this machine sure seems like it is for of a commercial enviroment.
