    Low profile weld positioner

    Saw this project some engineering students did. Pretty cool in my opinion, thought you guys might like it as well:

    Looks pretty nice to me. Mill some t -slots in it and call it done. Only down side I see is that it is flat position only, cannot tilt down for situations like welding pipe in 1g posiion... Although that could be remedied by building a tilting fixture I suppose.

    nice project, but it's got its design flaws.....
    no chuck or way to fix anything? add a chuck and it's over double as high so you loose the low profile benefit. only works horizontal, no through hole for welding pipes, etc. no direction reverse?

    It does have direction reverse (they show that in one of the videos). I do agree with the lack of a through hole and the lack of chuck though. Even with a chuck though, it'd still be lower than any positioned I've seen in that weight class. Adding a pivot body should be easy. As a prototype I think it's pretty spiff... it does need refinement though.
