A good combination is to have flashback arrestors at the regulators and check valves at the torch end.

The check valves are nice because they don't add a lot of bulk at the torch end.


And these are the arrestors.

When you inspect torches, keep an eye out for indications of internal fire damage such as heat discoloration.

This now-much-shorter Victor mixer left parts of itself in the tube when it melted. I guess the Smith and Airco designers have a point. Tip-mix torches don't do this:

good post...this is good to know...i always lite my torch with mixed gas so it does have all the black smoke.

I would recommend investing in a newer torch with built-in flashback arrestors and reverse flow check valves. It is too easy to get in a hurry and not take the time to put these in the line to the regulators separately.

under what circumstances would anyone use acetylene over 15lbs? i find 10 lbs works fine for everything from sheet metal to 3" plate by changing the cutting tip to the correct size.

Just reposted it Steve. Someone else did awhile back and I think the entire video series on proper setup and use should be a must watch for newbe OA torch users as well as a refresher for seasoned operators.

I was first introduced to acetylene welding 47 years ago when my dad welded aircraft tubing. He never had flashback arrestors on his equipment. He never had a flashback because he followed proper procedures. With that being said, I believe he was more lucky than good. This stuff can happen to anyone.
The older you get, the more safety conscious you become. Some call me paranoid, worry to much, etc. I've installed flashback arrestors on my torches, because I'd rather be a worrywart, than a dead wart.

I was thinking of putting flashback arrestors on my Victor med. duty torch handle but the 3/8 sizxe seems nonexistent.
Maybe I am missing them but all seem to be 9/16.

Way too many guys using torch rigs and don't know how close to a (catastrophic) failure they are at.
