Scrap metal art or projects
A lot of the art or projects I make end up being made from scrap metal. I have lurked here for a while before joining and "borrowed" a few ideas. I thought it would be nice to return that favor and post items I have made so others can see them and borrow as well. Please feel to post any of your scrap art or projects.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
I made this diving airlift out of 6" pipe. It was going to be used to excavate an area underwater.

Roman Legionnaires Pilum or spear. My daughter and I made this for her college history class. She could make something or writer a paper. Made from the sheet metal skin of a dishwasher, old wheel barrow handle and piece of round bar I had.

Guitar made from parts off old bicycles. Every part to include the strings are from old bicycles.

DNA sculpture made from a piece of 2x8 metal stud. FedEx managed to destroy it during the shipment to a customer in New York City. I had to re-imburse the customer but FedEx paid me the full value

Scrap metal art or projects

I don't really like this enough to hang on the wall. It was My very first weld project. Lots of ugly and thick butt welds. I was going for some multi tiered thing with stand offs, maybe I'll add to it I don't know. Went back in the scrap pile.

psacustomcreations> particularly like the DNA sculpture. Nice work.

Wine bottles should be angled downward. I'm told we don't want our corks drying out. That being said, we don't drink but I do use wine for cooking and the few bottles I have on hand are stored standing upright and I've never noticed any problems.
--
Your Pterodactyl is awesome.
--
SWells> I'm pretty sure I've seen a photo of your eagle before. Spectacular!!! Absolutely spectacular.
--
Seawalker> That's a very good first project. Much better than mine. You should take that out of the scrap pile and find a prominent place to hang it.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
Equilibrium, Thanks I had a thread in the machining section about trying to drill the holes in this. While I put these holes at about a 5 degree angle, it wasn't quite enough.
Thanks to everyone for their posts. Please add more, there is some serious talent here and even if you may not think much of it, people like myself enjoy seeing others work so we can push ourselves to get better.
A few more. These are made from slices cut off old scuba tanks

Made from scrap from other projects

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
I'm an entry level weldor and don't get to the machining threads... too advanced for me. I missed that thread. Was anyone in a position to offer a suggestion for correcting it? Just curious.

You've mentioned scuba tanks a few times. Presumably you have access to them. Did you see this thread, http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php...g-a-wind-chime ?

Really like the sculpture on the rock in the 3rd photo of your last post.
--
Say, you haven't by any chance fabricated anything other than a tool stand from a wheel rim have you? I've got quite a few rims stacked up in my upper driveway and have been racking my brain for ideas.

Thanks. I have sold over 100 bells so far so I will dig up some pics of the better looking bells and post them in that thread. I also made a video for Youtube showing the different sounds of steel versus aluminum bells and different strikers.
As far as an idea for the rims, have you thought about burying them halfway and using them as the basis for a sea serpent humps?

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
The stick man pushing the rock up the bookend is very creative.

While a sea serpent is a cute idea.... I don't know that burying rims half way in the lawn would work by me. I'd probably trip over them and break something walking around in the yard after dark. I'm thinking you must live where it doesn't snow or if it does.... you don't get any accumulations worth mentioning. By me, we can have drifts that are so high we can't see out our front windows. Combine that with a dog that can't be let out unless he's on a leash since he likes to supplement his diet with birds and squirrels and stray cats and I'm pretty sure that if I didn't break my leg running into them after dark during the warmer months..... I'd for sure run into any humps walking that dog in snow.

I hope you post some of your bell photos and your YouTube in that other thread on wind chimes.

This is a rose my son made when he was a freshman in high school. He used the metal from one of those Christmas cookie tins.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
These sculptures, a trike and gazebo, were made from scraps of 1/16" s.s. tig wire. All the wheels of the trike spin...

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
These aluminum sculptures were made entirely from weld metal, with no grinding. The filler rod used was given to me from an electrician who ripped some aluminum electrical cable out of a building. I cut and removed the plastic wire sheathing, and the inner wires were 1/8" rods. Perfect for these!!
The first one is a tropical hut and a palm tree. The second one is a Mexican guy sleeping up against a cactus, while his donkey waits for him to wake up...

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
This one is also weld metal only. It was made with the same aluminum electrical wire as my other ones. I looked at my own hand, welded a little, looked at my hand some more, then welded some more, etc.

That hand is awesome! 1/4 mile of wire in that one?

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
Steelsurgeon - Your work is great. Is that regular aluminum electrical wire? Do you have any idea what alloy it might be? I have a decent amount of it that is pretty heavy gauge but did not realize it could also be used as filler.
