    Another different piece.

This is a first attempt at a cable belay or holding device.

There are some that exist, but do not operate in the way the user wants.

This design was just a SWAG modification of an existing device used in a slightly different way.
This one doesn't offer enough friction to hold the cable properly.
It must hold the cable without kinking it.

Round two of the device will have three holes of the smaller diameter and spaced a little closer together.
I may add a set of three even smaller diameter holes on the other side.

The three holes are 1-1/4" diameter spaced 3 inches apart.
The two holes are 1" spaced 4 inches apart.

    Scrap metal art or projects

    Nice. Relatively easy to adjust.

    Did you drill or plasma?

And I learned a new word

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

    Drill and lots of sanding.
Probably too much sanding since that reduced the friction.

Part of the challenge is that it needs to be operated off a davit or hook on a small boat.

Despite how old those bookends look, Keith will probably outlast them.

    Another off the wall project.
An artist friend of mine has some gooseneck lamps she uses for indoor art shows.
She lost the shades a while ago. If I would make her a shade, I could have three of the extra lamps.
A bit of sheet metal work and some paint and they are done.

    Nice sheet metal work, Pat.

I will refrain from any "off the wall" comments

Pretty sure that's how Ron Covell does it!

Packed off the keg ashtray to its new owner. He sent me this note - gave me warm fuzzies:

It was a very cool experience working directly with an artist to commission a custome piece.
First for me! I enjoyed working with you so thanks for doing this with me.

The fee you charged for the commission will be long spent and a distant memory but Iím certain you will always remember the compliment.

    Congrats.
Hopefully it will lead to more work.
It also gives you a better understanding of your value as an artist.

My entire life has been 100% commission - never a salary.

And yep - it's happy customers that appreciate my effort I always remember.

Thanks for the encouragement all along this journey. Every day is a good day.

A customer wanted a chair repaired. She paid a lot of money, (approximately $500 each) for these aluminum chairs from an artist in England.
This one broke right on top. A quick inspection revealed porosity all over and in general what I would consider poor workmanship.
Grind out for a full weld, dab, cool down, repeat. Paint.

Will you need to inspect the other chairs or she going to wait to see if there's going to be a problem?

We have both looked at the other chairs and there do not appear to be any other breaks.
She will wait until there is a problem.
She filed a claim and received money to repair this chair.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

Hey Iím new to this thread, and I have been welding for about 6 months and have been working as a welder for 3 months with a nearby company. I was wondering if anyone new where to get cheap stainless metal scraps to practice with and do projects with. Stainless scraps, carbon scraps, really anything but mainly just stainless. All about 1/4Ē thick or around there
