I stopped at a corner of a T intersection where some tracks run parallel to the top of the T Street in the intersection. I knew they had done some work on the tracks recently and I happen to be driving next to the tracks before coming to the corner where the cross street crosses the tracks. I think I was there less than 2 minutes and I was able to grab 9 spikes.

    Good score.

Depending upon the part of town, maybe you need to put on some old clothes and then grab a shopping cart and push it around with you. You could pretend you are homeless and most people will make it a point to ignore you.

LOL OMG that is some funny stuff right there. I got a good chuckle out of that. Yeah I'd catch me a quick ride to the clink for sure. Cops have been cracking down on the homeless lately, arresting them for loitering, pan handling etc you name it so yeah that's not one I'm willing to try

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

Here is my latest big bell. It is 7.5 feet tall. The gear on the botttom came from a dozer and is about 32 inches in diameter. I have had two of these gears for about 3 years as I try to come up with ideas for them.

The total weight is estimated at 150 to 175 pounds.

I have had this dea in my head for a while but I needed to get the parts.

The auger on the right is somewhat of my own creation. I bought a section of spiral auger that was about 10 feet long but without a center tube. A piece of 1.25 inch schedule 40 pipe fit perfectly.

I just bought the saw blade when I was down in Georgia this past week.

Pretty creative Pat. I used one the the RR spikes today. Not for art and it's a far cry from looking good enough to be considered art imo. Any way here is how I used the Spike.

Yeah, the guy who gave them to me said they were drive sprockets off a dozer. I called them gears since I cut and paste that description to my Facebook page. Some people on there might not know what a drive sprocket is.

I also received some teeth off a bucket and blades off a grader or other equipment of some kind.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

This should also go in the Craigslist score thread.

I have been looking for nice wooden pulleys to use to suspend a bell for another project. I found these on Facebook market this morning for $10 each. When I went to the guys house he let me look around and I ended up with this lot of tools plus the cart for only $165.

The cart was only $25. The Victor torch, Harris mini torch plus tips, and all the hose and regulators were $75. I have never seen a bar clamp like this and thought it was cool and is made by Dayton. Plus there were three different air tools and a bunch of accessories for them. There was also two aluminum attachments for an industrial mixer that I will re-purpose somehow.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

40 Years ago, I was on a short list of customers allowed on the second floor of the local farm store. I found a bundle of ten antique wooden pulleys that never had been used. They were labeled $1.99. I brought them down stairs, and put them on the counter. The owner looked at them; "what are you doing with these?" he asked.

    "Buying them", I answered.

He started looking through his books.

I asked why he was searching?

"I'm trying to find a price", he said

"They have the price on them", I said

After a few minutes of disagreement, he asked how many I wanted.

    "All of them." I replied

"Like Hell you will!" was his reply

    I ended up with one.

37 years later, his son closed the store. At the auction, the successful bidder was confused that his bid was for a single piece, not all of them. He left without them.

I won't say what I paid for 6 more. Here is the original after 40 years hard use.Name: IMG_0657.jpg

I like the new bell, very creative; the Dayton clamp looks like it might be a spring compressor. Funny you got the dough mixing beater...I saw 2 dead commercial mixers at the scrap yard last week and was thinking of how they could be reutilized, but too heavy to mess with.

Here are the two parts to the mixer. I saw the hook one and know it will work great as a bell hanger.

Nice score Pat. I like that base and auger fighting up right. I have a sweep auger that would work for that. I do have a few wood pulleys in stock. Just gotta locate them.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

This is a bit of a tool review.

A few months ago I ordered the Ultra Jig from Yesteryear Forge. It is expensive at $500. It includes everything I need for repetitive bending of various sizes in a small package. This is much easier for me to store than dozens of pieces of pipe welded to angle and then held in a vise.

I was using the Jig this morning to make eye hooks from scraps. The hooks are welded inside bells and used to suspend the clapper. The scraps came from a larger rack that I am cutting down and using to make racks for scuba tank hibachi's.

I think Vaughn has one that he uses for his blacksmith items. I will also use the Jig for that type of work as well.

Really nice jig. I bought long pegboard arms at garage sale for a $1.00. I use them for making " S " hooks. Perfect length after cutting off inseration end. Only way to do things today.

Are you using a jig of some kind as well? I used to make these hooks by using visegrips and clamping to a small bolt and then trying to twist and beat with a hammer.

This is so much easier. Place in jig, bend around pin, flip over, bend back a bit and done.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

This project is to make six targets for side scan sonar. They are made from stainless steel and that made some aspects a bit of a challenge.

I used my slip roller and drive adapter to roll the expanded metal and top and bottom edges.

The challenges are from not having the right material to make the edges so I have to rip some larger flat bar to size. That is done with a band saw and metal cutting blade. I have to make these for my regular job. The guy who purchased the material and made the plan didnt talk to me before he bought the material so I have to work with I have.

Add in trying to weld the 1/16" expanded metal to the 1/8" pieces and having the expanded metal melt much quicker.

It's a vintage tire bead breaker. Easy sell to the antique car collectors.

Hi pat, sorry for the late reply. I have been the turning cams on the anvil I bought. I do have assorted pieces of pipe tacked to angle that is handy. Anytime I need more than one I'll try to makeup some type of jig. Same for my HF 20 ton press. I have all sorts of tooling I made.

Your new jig setup is the nuts. I watch for one's similar. Diarco has a slick one put haven't found one reasonable yet.
