100 percent agree. I like to leave my yard art builds super rustic like its been out in the weather for years.

I like both looks rustic and finished or clean bare/bright. One problem with the rustic look is just that it tends to blend into most outdoor backgrounds, especially at any distance.

I've also always been a fan matte clear sprayed clean/unfinished metal, especially with mill scale, marking paint/lines, etc - like it just came off the metal shop racks. It's popular nowadays with the industrial look trend, and I've even had people request I leave the sharpie measuring scribbles/reference lines and scribes in visible places on pieces in that type of off the metal shelf look (light coat of clear spray with a little dry time in between next coat works great over both sharpie and markzall markers).

It’s 100% personal preference and depends on the project and eventual environment of course but....I too am partial to the clear applied over grinder gouges/swirls and scribe lines.

Clear coat on little sheet metal sculpture I made. Cool table was from a dumpster dive.

Great example Lis2323. That's a really beautiful piece, looks like a stylized flame and works so well with that table. Dig the millwrights guide as the perfect finishing touch - interior designing for hetero men 101

I needed to make an aluminum grab rail for the top of one of our trucks at work. I didn't have any 90's so took some cuts out of the pipe, heated it, bent it then welded it back together.

That’s really nice, Pat! Those aren’t regular electric heat guns you’re using on the bend are they?

One of them is a Steinal that has a digital temp setting. The other was a typical heat gun. The bend went OK. I cut more than needed for the first bend and cut an inch or so less for the secknd bend.

Good idea on the heat guns. Handier than open flame. Ill have to remember that.

It was easier for me to control the temps this way compared to using OA or a small propane or butane torch

Made up a couple replacement horse trailer dividers

only 1 original and bent to badly to slide

added some divider bars- so the horses can't bite each other.

This little piggy was made from scrap 5/16" plate, and the spacers were some scrap 5/8" square stock.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

    Thank you.

I used to do quite a bit of metal sculpture, both fabricated and blacksmithed pieces. But I havn't played around with it for a few years. But the bug bit me yesterday, I enjoyed the free form and not having to pay attention to accuracy. I think I will be playing around more.

Nice horse divider. I imagine they could get a little ornery and take a chunk out of each other.

Nice job on that angle haul!

Brings back memories. I probably shouldn’t be saying this but every girlfriend I had that was into horses (trainers or riders) was a nut case.

Nice. What did you use for the finish? All slip roll work?

Thanks. Yes, it was all slip roll work and then I had it powder coated.

Sure you could. IF I know I'm gonna be making more than one, I'll make a jig or some jigs. I have many that I used for specific pieces. Some are multi useful.
Making the first one can be time consuming.
Fabricating the second one is always easier and I always find ways to improve

It went well. I just put the piece in the gallery a few days ago. I have about a dozen pieces there and have sold a couple so far.

This gallery is the only one of its kind in Virginia since it specializes in, or only carries 3 dimensional art work. No paintings, drawings, photos etc that are 2D.

Pat that piece looks pretty cool. It almost looks like a Samurai or a Ninja. Wahhh Chop Suey
