dmc, It flys 24/7 regardless of weather. When it deteriorates it will be taken down and replaced. No lights on it for all to see at night time Why did you want to contribute to fund such a project?

You shouldn't fly the flag at night without a light.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
Do street lights count? Those new LED lights they use are pretty bright.
So is it unethical or disrespectful or something to fly a flag at night with out a light? Please excuse my ignorance on this matter. I never served so I dont know all the honorable things that apply to proper flag etiquette. I take it you want to preach about the light but not step up and help fund the cause. That would require electrical modifications etc and I'm not presently financially able. Hopefully this will change here in the near future.

Its technically illegal according to the US flag code. Not that it would ever be enforced.
https://flagsinternational.com/is-li...flag-required/
Needs to have proper illumination so if there is a street light nearby and you can clearly see the flag at night you are probably OK.

This is the flag code from Military.com
§5. Display and use of flag by civilians; codification of rules and customs; definition
The following codification of existing rules and customs pertaining to the display and use of the flag of the United States of America be, and it is hereby, established for the use of such civilians or civilian groups or organizations as may not be required to conform with regulations promulgated by one or more executive departments of the Government of the United States. The flag of the United States for the purpose of this chapter shall be defined according to title 4, United States Code, Chapter 1, Section 1 and Section 2 and Executive Order 10834 issued pursuant thereto.
§6. Time and occasions for display
It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
Oh ok so it is a Military thing. I never served so was unaware and never looked it up. I thought I was doing a good thing.
Great now I need a night light so I dont offend those non special ops guys who are not good at seeing things in the dark. Jk just a little humor to make light of things, never mind me. I never claimed to be the light if the party. You guys need to light a fire under my A$$ and get the ball rolling. It's a good thing the flag pole is light otherwise I probably would not have been able to set it in the base.

Thank you, I'll have to go pay attention tonight and see how visible it is with the surrounding ambient light

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
That’s pretty interesting. There’s no mention of illumination under Canadian flag protocol.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
I have not posted in here in a while but that does not mean I haven't been working on projects. It seems kind of a waste to post the 20 or more bells that are very similar to other ones I have posted in the past. Add in some work travel and art shows on the weekends and I have still kept busy.
This however is a bell for a police officer out in the Los Angeles area.
I also made a chiminea that was featured in another thread.
Plus a guy at work had some pieces of stainless steel round bar that he wanted turned into tent stakes.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
I've made a few things lately out of scraps but nothing worth sharing IMO but what the heck. Here is my latest contraption out of scraps. For all my scraps LOL. Made it for the lady but hey I guess you all might can appreciate it.

Oh yeah before I forget to ask. Pat have you used the new fire pit chiminea thing and if so how do you like it and how does the heat spread etc. That's exactely the type of chiminea I was thinking about building some time back with three openings.

I have not used it so don't know how well it performs. I saw that other thread and thought it looks good and should do well at art shows. I made a template out of cardboard using 7.5" sides on the hex and squares. I used the Milwaukee metal circular saw to cut the pieces of material from 1/8" plate. The saw makes it nice since there is almost no clean up, just debur the edges and start welding. I used 10" long pieces of 1" square tube for the legs and the pads are 2"x3". I mitered the legs at a 15 degree angle and moved them to the edge of the base to give it more stability. If you make one using 4" square tube like this for smoke stack and cut it at an angle, don't make the mistake I did by having the inside weld seam show up. In hindsight that is a pretty big error for looks.
In person this fire box seems a bit small so I cut some more cardboard hex and square pieces using 8" sides. That should add 1.5" in each direction so I think it will help. I will probably use hot glue on the cardboard pieces to test out the new size. If I make one that size I will change the legs to using 2" square tube. I may bump up the smoke stack to a piece of 6" square tube if I have some.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects
It still looks pretty good Pat. I now see the seem in the flue pipe you are talking about. I think I might have placed the legs in the middle of the full sheet 6 sided pieces for aesthetics and so the feet would be out of the way from the openings for fuel loading reloading. Seems to me the legs/feet might be a toe stubers for people that wear open toed shoes etc with them being located how the are now. Thanks for sharing

Very nice! I’m trying to get some ideas of how to secure my bottles on my truck bed, and I’ve got some inspiration out of this project, what type of straps are those? I like the idea of one handed operation, and the hook that just clips on to the side. Where’d you find those?

Spare curtain straps from my Utility Tautliner trailer were used.
