Since Bob mentioned bells, here is a batch of them I made before I went to Alaska.

The rusty ones in the center were made from cylinders I received from Ed Kidera.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

I decided to revamp my air system for the plasma table. The air comes right out of top of the compressor and into the intercooler on the wall. From there it goes to the volume tank, which has an auto drain on the bottom, and then into the refrigerated dryer. Finally down to the regulator, desiccant dryer and moto guard paper filter.

The beads in the first desiccant filter were like that before I did this. We will see if the color change progresses.

I have been busy with my regular job and haven't made as much as I would like.

The red, white, blue bell started out as a customers request. They changed their mind and bought one with the arrowhead of the National Park Service as a wedding gift.

The other piece is a painted steel with a copper pipe.

That couple made a great choice - me and my missus love when we find travel or experience "mementos" that really capture the best of a journey.

They all look great, beautiful work as always.

My sculpture "Union" has been accepted to be on display as part of the Fredericksburg Public Sculpture Project. It will be placed in its location in a few months.

Congrats and well deserved! Is this just for display purposes for the public to enjoy or as part of an Artprize style installation?

    Thank you.

I receive $2,000 from the city to display it for a year. If a person wants to buy it during that time, it is sold for my asking price and then the city takes a healthy commission.

If it does not sell. I just pick it up after a year.

This same city selected one of my arch shaped bells last year as part of their Public Sculpture Project. They have asked to keep that bell on display for another year. In addition to displaying this new piece at another location.

That would appear fair. Gives you the artist some nice public exposure.

True, but amongst artists, there is something called "exposure dollars". Vaughn and I joked about it before. I have had people ask me to give them an item and I will be paid with "exposure" that is supposed to lead to future sales.

In this case, since I am receiving a stipend, I don't mind. Plus, I can use this as leverage to apply to other Public Sculpture competitions. Some of them have a requirement that you must have an item on display in the past before you are allowed to submit. Kind of like the the work experience dilemma where you cant get hired because you don't have experience.

Sounds like a job for old school Russian computer hacking.

Edit. So if a sale occurs while it is on display the commission to the city should be paid by you “in kind” also.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

A customer requested a four foot version of my "Moon Song" bell. They wanted the cylinder to have a plasma cut Kanji of. "Peace Cross".
I made a second one with a "Harmony" Kanji.

The customer bell is on the right.

Apply some acid and a few other items and some rain, and two hours later you have this.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

That weathering really came out nice. Will you apply a clear coat over that weathered finish psacustoms? If so do you have an outdoor clear coat you recommend?

I currently go with permalac, flood penetrol, or 2k automotive spray can finishes and/or a combination there of.

That finish looks beautiful, and has an almost wood like quality to it as is. In the southwest US enviroment I live in natural finishes mostly reduce to a very even, "fresh rust" color and texture. I much prefer the streaked type of weathering on your pieces.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

The purchaser wants it to look very rustic or dark. I am going to leave hers alone so it gets even darker.
Like you, I like the colors and streaks of this the way it is.
I have not tried the paints you have mentioned. Are they applied with a paint gun? I will have to do some research on them.
The only ones I have used are Rustoleum gloss clear and Krylon Satin.
The Rustoleum turns the colors more orange. The Krylon looks pretty good but is not durable.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

permalac and flood penetrol are solvent based and can be thinned or applied as is with a gun, brush, or roller.

They have have the advantage of being easy to apply and just as easy to maintain and recoat (scuff a bit if wanted, clean, and apply a few coats on top of old).

I know permalac is a thinned shellac basically, i suspect penetrol might be the same. They are like a varnish for a boat in their upkeep and application (think epifanes or total boat).

PENETROL® Oil-Based Coating Additive is a versatile low-odor additive to improve penetration, adhesion and flow of oil-based paints, stains, varnishes and primers.

Improves penetration and adhesion to compensate for weathering on surface
Improves flow to reduce brush marks; extends open and working times
Restores luster to faded, weathered fiberglass
    Inhibits rust on metal surfaces

2k paint and clear coat (automotive style 2 part paint and hardener) is really as good as it gets for longevity, but recoating and touch ups are much more difficult.

The spray paint style aerosol cans make much extremely easy to use but be sure to keep your pets away and use proper ppe, the hardener makes this extremely bad news for living tissues.

psacustomcreations, I really loved that union piece.

It looks so musical and the colors are a great balance in the same way as the shapes and negative space balance one another. Even the implied weight and the way the top side piece hangs/is suspended by the gold ring. Very visually intriguing and just "pretty".

I think it's a great example of the beauty and elegance that can be expressed with something minimalist and "modern".

Congratulations on having it accepted, I can imagine it's very gratifying after all your hard work and it is certainly a beautiful piece of art.

Are coconut de-huskers a recent thing? I just saw another one on "Instructables" last week. Sure look handy!
