They way these shows normally work is you drive to your spot if are lucky, or near your spot if not, dolly or hand truck your items to your spot. Then move and park a bit away from there. Come back and set up. That takes me about 2 hours.

Reverse for load out. Tear down completely and stack it, get a pass to come pick it up and then pack it away.

I try to cheat if I can and park nearby and hand truck or dolly my items back and forth. It is easier on me than fighting other artists for space.
    Aha. Enclosed trailer

Don't have to unload when you get home.

Thanks. Some people use outdoor carpets at shows if they are on the grass and it is expected to rain.

No wonder your art work looks so great!

You get PAID 8 hours a day to hone your skills and creativity then spend your “free” time with Donner in your shop or schmoozing discerning art lovers on weekends

Do you wear a loud colourful Hawaiian shirt at work, also?

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

A couple more items for others to consider.

I was talking to another member in a private conversation and a couple of points were brought up.
    Movement, sound and light.
You only have about 5 to 10 seconds at the most as a person walks by your booth.

In the attached pic, the item circled on the right actually moves. The ball rocks back and forth with a gentle touch or some breeze. This startled a few passerby, brought some people over and made some just stop and watch.
When someone in front of you stops and looks in a particular direction, it is natural for you to do the same.

Every couple of minutes I would rock the sphere back and forth and watch as people stopped and stared or started talking about it.

I would also ring the bell every couple of minutes as well. The sound carries well so people would also stop and look at it.

There is one thing I should have done differently at this show. The tent in the pic is approximately 7 feet tall. That allowed for some light to enter, but I noticed that people who were over 6 feet tall still looked up at the edge. If I were to raise it another notch or so, that might have let more light in and made those who were taller feel more comfortable.

I am only 5'8" so didn't think about it until much later in the show when I realized I had some people who 6'4' or so still look up. Granted that may be habit from walking in doorways, but anything that detracts or makes them duck should be avoided.

I should have also brought my rechargeable LED shop lights. I could have hung them from the ceiling to help spotlight areas or particular pieces.

I still need to buy high quality spotlights for a better display.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

    You're right about attracting customers.
My bells and windchimes for that for me.
There's usually enough wind for a soft soothing sound from my Aluminium Oxygen tanks. I now use half of a plastic croquet ball for the clapper inside. It's perfect !
People see the bells made from oxygen tanks and can't resist ringing them.
If they have kids, I have a league baseball screwed to a handle that they can swing at the bell.
I've noticed recently that there are more people with dogs then ever before. Now I'll bring doggie treats too.
I have some dinner triangles too that help.
Getting potential customers to stop, is the first step.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

Trying a little different layout that you will see this weekend.
After discussing it with another member, I wanted to change the heights of some of the items. In this case I want the eye to follow the lines up and down.
Plus at this event I should not have another tent right next to me so the public will be able to walk around the items and see them from different perspectives.

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

    Looks really good psacustom creations.

Surprising what a big difference layout can make.

Have you tried different background and/or base (podium) colors? It might be worth your time to buy a few cheap colored table cloths (or photoshop if you're keen) and see if they further attract the eye and as well as accentuate your art.

after thought - I think the bench might be best displayed on the raised stands, maybe at an angle (two different sized podiums). It would really show off the live edge as well as giving people a chance to see the legs and top as a whole.

Looks great either way, Best of luck!

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

Finished a couple of Xmas presents for the missus' family.

For her brother and wife (he was in the Navy - seems kinda nautical...)

And for one of their daughters. Her boyfriend just kicked cancer's butt and we're pretty sure they'll be together for life (early 20's - sheeeesh).

Re: Scrap metal art or projects

This past weekend ended up being the best one I have ever had at an art show.
Sold that table, kinetic sculpture, two large bells, railroad spike piece, and some smaller pieces.

One bell owner wants me to customize it and is also looking for a very large custom sculpture. Their house is 7000 sq ft patterned in a Frank Lloyd Wright style.

I had a couple that owns 320 acres with an abandoned town on site. They want me to make a sculpture for them. They will give me access to the property and I can take any items I want and make them something. I then keep anything else I want.

Plus another couple already reached out to me today about a commission .

ShootR, those turned out awesome !!
Those are to nice to give away....

That's great Pat !! It had to be the shirt !

I was thinking about doing a Railroad Spike piece.
Kevin Caron does them. His prices for the tall ones are in the thousands !! I know he's established, but there crazy $$$ .

What a feeling that had to be. I'm glad you did well.

An abandoned town? That would make for a wonderful walk-through. Even something "mundane" as floorboards would be quite the haul. There's no telling what you might find in the old midden heaps and such.
