currently in training in Army, looking for job afterwards

    Hello--

I'm a little over a month away from graduating from my welding training in the Army and I'm beginning to look online for jobs/apprenticeships, etc. (I'm National Guard, not Active Duty). The school is AWS certified/accredited.

I would prefer to work in the northern NJ or NYC area since that is where my family is, but I am open to traveling as well. (I'm single and unattached.)

Most of the job postings I've found require at least 2-5 years of experience, which I obviously don't have.

Would it be a good idea to seek out an apprenticeship instead of a regular job?

I looked into welding schools in my area, but there don't seem to be any.

Any other suggestions or information would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

Ironworkers, Pipefitters. Check out Helmets to Hardhats. Some locals/trades may give you credit for your Army training.

I was gonna say you should get credit for the school and military experience. I did when I got out. It's a great trade, I made my money over the years doing just that and managed to do well by my standards, you can too. Ohrah, Rangers out!

I know a couple Ironworkers did the gaurds thing, worked out well. They were good hands and managed to work steady and done in iron at 52 or 53.

I knew a guy had a college degree, was a phys Ed teacher. Started working when it was legal at 18, thru college as a barely full time student, off summers and a few weekends and with it in the summer and some premiums was near full time Ironwork with health on the teachers, 2 pensions, no time to spend and all paid for long time.

Be a really good 7018 and innershield welder, good pretty test plates and reliable and it's almost a pass on any job you want. Easy to get referred when it's time to move on.

You guys are a little late to this thread. The OP will probably be posting to the Retirement Thread one of these days.

Wasn't your fault, except for responding to spam. Spammer had posted, then deleted by the mods. That left your post as the next one after a 12 year dormancy.

that explains something to me. i used to fix there stuff. i had a customer, that had there equip in there ffleet. cracks in the pedestools of outriggers all the time, and sometimes in the subframe, often in some type of flare weld that lacked throat. sometimes very hard to get too w/ hyd equip/lines and/or having to remove. altec got a repair/warranty facility in a small farm town b/t sf and sac, but, they will keep ur equip a month or two before u get it back.

lol, yea, 1st day is traning, 2nd day they turn them loose. really not bad as some, lil more effort in high stress areas would help. but, hey, there in the biz to sell/resell, so maybe it part of there marketing strategy

Apply to those jobs that require 2-5 years experience. Now a days Showing up to work and not being high is half the job. BTW bring a helmet and basics to take a weld test.
We've done so much, for so long, with so little. Were now qualified to do anything with nothing !
