Totally agree with you, but one will come your way...be patient.

Great shop upgrade you did here, I see now why you want a mill.

The will probably sell pretty quickly being that it has the variable speed head on it.

But anytime the seller tells you it's well used, it means it's well used...

Not to mention it's a good 5-6 hour drive from you...trying to negotiate is always advantageous if possible. Sometimes just being honest with people and telling them you have only X amount of $$$s to work with can secure a deal. Just sayin'...

Yeah the well used thing is definitely true. I have the mill- drill which does what I need for the most part. Eventually one will pop up at the right time.

You will find something local, or close enough, and be at a price you can afford. There is more old iron on the market than ever. Keep the truck gassed up with the trailer waiting when you need it!

I'm not dead set on a Bridgeport either. God forbid I would even consider an Asian clone🤣

I will be doing the same once this new place is set up and we've sold her house.

My house was sold last year.

I would mount the phase convert on the block wall to keep noise down. I would put the covert outside.

Not a good option as we get a fair amount of snow here. It's not very loud anyways.

    Re: Garage modification

You put cover over the converter and put the aircompresser outside under the same cover.

And how would that work when it gets 10 -30 below zero in my climate? If it would have been practical I would have done it when I put the stuff in.

I've got a bud who does paint and body. Runs two 80 gallon compressors to keep up his air supply.
He got tired of listening to them and put them outside the back wall under a cover - but didn't enclose them.
Must not hurt them much, still running last I saw...I've considered it myself...

Coldest it ever got in my old shop was about 0 deg f.
My compressor still kicked over like it was in a warm shop - not sure what it would do at -30, too expensive to try it

I always worried about lines freezing up. With so many cordless and corded tool options now I really don't use compressed air much. Mainly for a blowgun and airing up tires. It did get a good workout last year when I did the body and paint work on the last truck project.

The lines probably won’t freeze up but if you run an auto drain, that will surely freeze up.

Also the amount of condensation you’re putting in your tanks, they are probably rusting internally at a rapid pace.

Even though it’s outside in the cold, The compressor is still pumping hot/warm air into a freezing cold tank.

Yeah way too many negatives to a few positives. Oil is cold causing a huge load on the motor. Pressure switch can get finicky and even V belts don't perform well in the cold. In 40 or so years I've never been around an outside installed compressor so I don't see the need now. Certainly auto drains would fail in just about any freezing situation.

My old air compressor sat in an unheated shop for years. My new one is in a heated dog house on the side of the shop and I'd never go back. Yes, lines do freeze up, moisture in the bottom of the tank is there until spring, belts get stiff, oil gets stiff and probably speeds up wear in the compressor itself, and you need the subzero hoses or they get so stiff they are a pain to work with. Doghouse is my solution. Coldest my old shop got was likely somewhere around -30C.

    Re: Garage modification

When had my shop I used 60 gal tank so air compresser did not have cycle as often.
They make oil for wide range temperatures.
Where live it rare it drops below 32°F.
But we had wait till temperatures was above 65°F for painting.
The summer comes night temperatures are in upper 80's°F daytime 110's°F a different problem for oil.
