Well I would like to thank you all for your input. I have patched the two sides of the frame on the 97 just aft of the axle, approximately 11" long patch. I took more time in the prep, I used my needle scaler then the grinder then the flap disk then I used my media blaster and gave them a once over with that. I used 1/8" flat stock for the patches, I made templates, then welded them up like the safety caps. I cut some holes in them where I knew the frame was solid so I could plug weld them. Now keep in mind I did this at my house where I have a 200 amp service not 4' from my welding outlet. I was able to do a much better job, I took my time, gave the machine a few breaks. Maybe I was using my machine over it's duty cycle. I cleaned each piece of any millscale also. I have never had any formal training in welding, I started off many years ago with a stick welder then about 10 years ago I bought my first mig. I like to keep improving and appreciate the direction you guys offer.
I know you guys don't know me or my capabilities but I can assure you I wouldn't do anything that would risk another's life. I have built many things that are of structural design, I built my own 6 x 10 dump trailer 5 years ago and it get's used on a regular basis (7K) I have a 20 ton press brake that I built in my shop. I can't even remember all the stuff I have welded. I built my log splitter from scratch, has a 11 hp engine, 20 gpm two stage pump, 30" stroke with a log lift and a slip on 4 way wedge. The wedge is 1" thick. I'm by no means a novice but I don't profess to be a pro either.
Thanks again and yes, Jeeps are money pits! I do love driving it off road. In fact this past week I swapped in some different axles with 4:10 gears, I made all the brackets for the 8.8 in the rear, cut, bent and welded them on.

The unlimited bend test is the ultimate test.
Until one can pass it, you are not a real weldor.
Some people use a MM252 and still cant pass an unlimited test on 3/8.
And the only reason I did it was to prove all the "you need a 180 class machine to weld ______ " wrong.
