    "clean power" generators...

What is the actual cutoff for THD on generators for Everlast not to void the warranty. I've heard "clean power" bandied about without a specific percentage noted, minus one mention of 10% falling "within" the limits by Mark several years ago.

    Specifically, the 211si.

5% THD or less is the standard for "clean" power.

5% is grid power. Do these inverters really need that clean? That leaves out about 99% of all generators big enough to operate these welders.

No, actually it doesn't. Many new generation welder generators and generators are that clean.

Found a couple that met the 5%, but they're pretty spendy. Believe it or not, the NorthStar 13kw is rate 5%, and doesn't completely break the bank at around $2500, but the rest are $3500 up, like the XP version from Generac, etc. Most I found only rated "Less than 6%THD". The NS is surge rated at 13kw, running at 10.5kw. That should be enough for the 211si, shouldn't it?

You missed the Northern Tool's PowerHorse line. 9kw for about 750.00. It'll handle many of our welders and should do ok with the 211 in most of it's range. Thd of 6% should be ok though.
If you are going to spend 3500 on a generator, spend a little more and get a welder generator with clean power.

Saw it, but thought 9k was too close to the max inrush for the 211. Was shooting for something that could cover that in constant and leave the surge for insurance.

A good many customers have bought that one and have been satisfied with its performance. This isn't an official endorsement here of any brand, but relaying a number of people's experiences. The inrush is highest with this unit I believe with stick, so in MIG it may be less.

Good to know. Mig/Tig is where I need the portability of the Genset, for the most part.

In the QandA portion on their(generac's) website, they have stated it is above, 5%, but do not explicitly state what it is.

Hold on to your shorts for this one. Generac says all but the XP versions of their portables are....ready?....between 10 and 25%.

That's why Honda, Yamaha, and others like them are so popular. Inverter type generators have no issue with this.

Heads up. Briggs and Stratton informed me ALL their portables fall between 3% and 6% THD.

THD stands for Total Harmonic Distortion.

Ha, didn't even notice she typed true instead of total. Guess I won't be trusting their customer support answer.
