I don't know many shops that will work on clutches at all. Thinking behind that is clutch wear, slipping, or not engaging has been usually caused by a bad compressor. There are many that can be fixes, they just treat it as one part to avoid comebacks.

Sure glad I ordered the $25 tool. 4 yrs later and the compressor is still working fine, and they wanted $500 to change out the compressor.

I have the tool too, but many newer vehicles won't even offer you the clutch. It's the whole assembly or nothing. Just depends what you're working on.

Well, in my case a clutch wasn't needed, just needed the air gap closed up. If what you say is true, and I don't doubt it, the compressor co's don't want people getting by cheap. F--k the customers all and the weak ones twice!!

Any chance I could convince you to mail me the shims you took off that subaru. I just got an impreza and it seems someone knew just enough to be dangerous and replaced the clutch, but didn't put any spacer shims in. My clutch physically cannot disengage, the air gap is nothing. I tried looking for shims on a few autoparts websites but they all say there are no shims for my car.

Sure! Just PM me a ship-to and I'll stick them in an envelope.
