Any decent password manager stores the passwords in an encrypted file.
I use KeePass. LastPass is supposedly very good too.

Re: Replace password after 5 days??? Really??

[QUOTE=VPT;7461631]That sucks! I have one site I go to, I believe my youtube account, that I have no idea what my password is anymore. They asked me to change my password so many times I have no idea what it is any more. Every time I have to log onto youtube I have to "reset password". Infuriating![/QUOT

I write my login info for each website that I use in a little notebook. Hard copy may be ancient tech but it still works as long as you don't misplace the book.

But what do you do when your computer turns up its toes and its last words are"I'm dead"? Notice I say when not if.

That's a good question. My answer used to be backup. Backup religiously.
Mac's Time Machine is a very simple and intuitive answer to this, and uses a cheap USB drive. Windows 10 now offers the equivalent. Cloud backup services are costlier, but there are big advantages to having your backup off-site.

For my own purposes at work, I've used both USB drive and cloud backups. Then a couple of years ago I was on a business trip out of the country, and when I arrived, I discovered that my hard drive was dead. Thankfully I had everything backed up, but when I returned, there were a few days I was hardly able to get any work done as I was busy restoring data onto a new blank drive.

Now, I rely on a home-brew synchronization and snapshot system mostly using Owncloud (with some custom VPN tunnels for it to work over). I now have two laptops on my desk (my work requires I have two computers anyway), and they're pretty much setup the same. Documents and data modified on either one are replicated to my cloud server, as well as to the other laptop (so the data resides in 3 places). I can pick up either laptop and walk away with everything I need, and any changes I make are replicated to the other as soon as I'm on a network. You could sledgehammer either one at any moment, and I won't miss a beat any more.

Okay... I'll take your word for it cause if you look behind you there is a cloud of dust back there and I am in it.

I actually generated a standard form in Excel or maybe it was in Spreadsheet from OpenOffice that I print out and keep in a 3-ring binder. Lists the necessary info with room to update passwords and login info. 1 site per page. That works for me. Granted someone could break into my house a wrestle my guard cat to the ground and steal it but they would have to wake him up first and he doesn't like to be wakened up.

I'm on another forum that is a vBulletin site. That site had a similar, forced password change recently due to the recent hack. That one now has mandatory password changes every so often, and strict password requirements (length, caps, numbers, special characters, etc.).

They also had a similar issue with the initial password change. First there was a banner notice that a forced password change was going to happen. If you changed your password on your own when you saw the notification, you would still have to change it again when the forced re-set was implemented. So, on that site as well there were people who had just re-set their password who were suddenly forced to change it again, days later.

I can't speak for the IT of WeldingWeb, but I would guess the situation is similar here. The forced re-set was likely initiated and everyone was forced to change their password, even if they just changed it. My guess is that from now on they will either be back to not requiring password changes, or possibly requiring them every six months or once a year, etc. I can't imagine they will require a password change every five days.

Your new name is "George". I can look up the previous one if you'd like. In 5 days you'll have to pick another name, however it can't be the same as your current one, or one you've used in the past year.

And just to make it interesting she's not supposed to write them down anywhere. Maybe that's why government doesn't work too well. All the employees are spending their productive time trying to remember their passwords.
And i thought i worked in a cluster fuchk!.....well,i DO but thats another story.

I vote for Mary Ann as his next name. BUT, Bls repair has to look the part too while using it.

I got the message that I had to replace my password because it was over 1,100 days old. It wouldn't let me log in until I changed it. Guess it's different for everyone.
