    Icarus Wings

This is a sculpture that I constructed back in 2012. It was a very long and intense process.

    "Icarus Wings"
    Painted Steel
    2012
    15' 6"H x 15'W x 6'D

    318 separate pieces
27 hours on the water jet
over 1 year in the making
    over 1500 welds
    over 70lbs of weld
over 12000 pictures processed at 60fps

Here is a video of the build from start to finish:

@ nzbrock - stunning. Beautifully conceived, designed, and executed. "Fly....on your wings like an eagle..."

Beautiful! I see the sculpture is in Florida. Is that where you work? I am in Ohio and have metal art/welding art friends up here who do commissioned pieces. I wrote this blog post about one of them:

Yea I live in Tallahassee, FL where the piece is located. Cool article, it's always interesting to read about other artist's processes.

It was painted by a local company with a lexus automotive color called "glacier frost mica". It is a white base with a blue pearl. The whole sculpture was first sandblasted, then epoxy sealed, then acid etch primer, then white base, then blue pearl, then clear. The paint job was the single most expensive part of the sculpture. Here is a close up shot with flash:
