Hello, was watching this tv program called 'car fix' and one of the guys was mig welding an exhaust that he had installed in the car. it showed him as he was finishing the weld. but unless he partially welded the hard to reach area, is it possible to weld around the pipe?:confused:

I get people calling me everyday asking me if I can weld the pipe with it installed on the car. I always say if you remove it I can weld it.

Ever go to the Mexican muffler shops? They weld all around it on the car and don't even look at the top where they are welding. And they do a really nice job too! And the work is cheap too.

my brother, one of which i would do anything for, bothered me to fix a leak he could hear on his truck. after doing a couple other exhaust jobs for fun, i swore off welding under vehicles, but, its my brother.

yup, get out a mirror and go to town! just like work, but you only need to put one pass on exhaust piping :)

I do it all the time.
In extreme tight areas you can cut a hole in the middle of the seam and weld it from the inside...then take the disc out of the hole saw and weld it back in on the bottom.

I've welded exhaust with a mirror before but it gets weird with everything reversed. You mostly just have to imagine it and not really look at the motion in the mirror.

1/16 6013 works good for tight spots too.
you can bend them to clear obstacles and they get the job done.

Did it on the vehicle for many years. This was mig of course. Not much issue going across the top most times. Weld check with mirror. Did get my worst case of flash burn once welding on a grain truck up where I couldn't reach with my helmet on. Closing your eyes doesn't work. We also had a sealant that worked well that would spread across the top of welds incase there was a small pinhole. Don't remember any coming back with issues. Alot of custom dual exhaust I did I welded my initials into the pipe.
