    Aluminized muffler

I bumped a tree limb with my tractor last week and put a crack in the fairly new muffler, which is aluminized steel.
Can the aluminum plating (I'm assuming that is how it is done) be ground off and then the steel welded? I'm using ER70S6 wire and 75/25 gas.

yes you can do what you said. Maybe a flap disk or scotchbrite wheel will be good enough to strip the aluminum without making the metal underneath any thinner that it already is.

I should have clarified, I was thinking a flap wheel or scotch brite pad on a grinder and not an aluminum oxide grinding wheel.
