    Why I don't build hitches

Unless it it's part of a full custom bumper, or it's just not available, I don't build hitches. Why? Because deals like this $62 Amazon warehouse deals which is half it's new price. (Click the new and used from link in the Amazon listing and it will show any warehouse deals) Includes all hardware and even the little fish wires that screw onto the bolts to feed them through the frame. Could not find any problems other than not having the original box. Hardware bag was still sealed. plus the benefits of perfect fitup and zero liability. This is on my new Subaru Forester 525lb tongue weight and 4500lb towing. Well above the rated capacity for this vehicle. I like overbuilt...

I agree, I don't build them for my pickups either - just too cheap to buy.

Just being a hobby welder I won’t build them either. Way above my pay grade!

I'd trust that Cep. I built one for my garden tractor. Granted I built that a few years ago using an AC225S that was a beach to use and no welding table. That was built on the ground. I have since honed my skills and have better machines and tools so I will probably redo this hitch some day.

cep's could be overkill for my '16 wrangler. i believe south's hitch could be just what i'm looking for even at $138 new. newsflash to me; neither will fit my vehicle

Here’s a hitch I built for a friend. So he could pull his horse trailer with his camper in the bed of the pickup.

Re: Why I don't build hitches

I see a lot of factory hitches made out of round tubing. Is round tubing stronger than square or rectangle when dealing with pushing and pulling on the side of the tube?

Oh btw that is a great deal you got Tiger.

I had planned on making a hitch for my S-10 that would of been hidden behind the license plate and fab a license plate frame / bracket that swings up like on a 1978 camaro.

Do you attach that goose neck with just one pin on each side ?

Re: Why I don't build hitches

Another advantage to buying over building....

I was able to buy a 1.25" hitch to fit my 1997 Jaguar XJ-6.

OK, it took 3 days to ship it. But it was an off-the-shelf part and fit all the quirks of the car perfectly!

The FEL's get a 2" receiver welded to the top for shuffling stuff around the property.

I have pad eyes welded to the front corners of the trailer. With two 1 1/2” grade 8 bolts.

And the front of the trailer where it normally rests oa a receiver ball appears to rest on the top of the goose neck extension. Genious.

I'd say they used round because it was easier to shape by mandrel.

Round tubing is used in applications which are subject to torque.

The cross tube on the hitch is subject to downward pressure from the receiver......torque. The force on the ball is trying to rotate the receiver tube.

Because a round shape resists torque with a smaller mass than other shapes, it's efficient and lightweight.
