I like the bore and press + braze idea. Or take it a step farther and thread it, then braze.
I'm rebuilding vices at the school. I have a cannibalized vise with a broken neck. I was going to scrap it but I just can't bring myself to do it. I'm thinking of brazing it up. Maybe cut it off, bore it out, press the neck in, and then braze it. Or maybe just grind it out and square it up before brazing. At this point I'm open to ideas. Anyone every repair one of these Wilton's broken like this?
I have a couple of brazed vises. All were repaired before I acquired them. I'm confident it can be done successfully. Just fishing for the best method. I'll likely braze it before I'd nickel weld it. I'm assuming these are cast iron but I haven't really dug into it.

My name's not Jim....
I'm with Boost on this one as long as you having the equipment, besides, much stronger too. Bob
I having seen some of your work here on WW, I have no doubt you can handle this job. Bob
I have three different vises that were given to me because they were broke. Brazed all of them. The oldest one is thirty five and has hard much abuse since then.
what do you think caused the crack in the first place? other than obvious abuse...someone smacking the vice with a BFH?

I'm surprised that happened in the first place. I have a stamped 1963 Wilton #60 and keep a 4' cheater to give that extra grunt now and then hasnt hurt it. Been in the family for some time now.
Braze on cast is okay, but nickel welding stick is a lot stronger in my experience. Lots of preheat, sand cooled, probably be half of what it once was which is still 250% better than most other vices out there,
