Anybody know what this tripod is for?

I found this tripod at the house we bought a few years back. I just wondering what it would be used for - lifting, rigging, lowering material, or ?

It is about 5' tall at the join. It is galvanized.

It seems pretty heavy duty and wellmade.

    Maybe someone will recognize it.

The lack of bracing between the legs tells me that it's definitely NOT heavy duty. It may be strong but without some bracing to insure that the legs don't bend or fold up, I would not use it for anything heavy or anything that was I wasn't willing to take a chance on falling.

It definitely would work for that, but would be pretty heavy to lug to the campsite.

how do you know it was ment to be a tripod, looks like those clamps could also just let the pipe hang straight down, that may just be a few parts to a much larger piece of something someone built..

No one carries a 'Dutch' when backpacking . . .

If the pipe-brackets are fixed at 120 its probably a tripod.

wb4rt, there are tripods to hold a 'soft pad' to the bilge of a sailboat that is standing on its keel- that look very similar? The boat's keel is on blocks holding 90some% of the boat's wt. This type of tripod had a rod inserted into the top of that outside tube and is adjusted to keep the boat (wine glass cross section) on and 'even keel' and upright. These tripods don't much hold wt as much as keep the boat from leaning.

not sure if this is the answer? but the similarity is there.

It could be used to pull posts/roots when used with a come-along.

    Hey Opus.

As an Eagle Scout I know better than to backpack a cast iron Dutch oven, although I often used two aluminum pie pans to do about the same. A tinfoil reflector oven makes great biscuits too!

I'm saying I wouldn't even lug this tripod when car camping.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I had already considered use as a corner fence post, pulling up fence post or saplings, and picking up manholes. Your ideas about propping up a boat, cooking tripod, etc are new thoughts.

I hope someone can come up with a good use otherwise I'm probably going to scrap it and get out of my way.

    Thanks !!

Looks like kind of a cool enough thing to me that it'd be a shame just to send it to the scrap yard. If nothing else its got some "yard art" potential. You could make one of those gongs out of an old welding gas cylinder and hang in the center of it.
