SA200 heat question?

So I recently got my SA200 welding and have noticed that when I weld I am a lot hotter than on my buzz box. What I mean is 125 amps on my SA200 feels way colder than 125amps on my buzz box. Is this normal with sa200?

The sa will have a much smoother and softer arc than your buzz box. Don't pay too much attention to numbers. If you need more heat, turn it up a little.

I would imagine your buzz box is an AC only machine in which case your arc characteristics are going to be a bit different than the DC of the SA200.

Also, are the SA exciter and main brushes in good condition and both armature commutators clean? Fine Voltage control rheostat winding surface clean?

Fine sandpaper or Scotch-Brite on the winding surface where the wiper contacts.

Don't forget your 125 amps can be obtained on two different heat settings combined with the appropriate fine currant adjustment. Each will give you different arc characteristics.

I run 7018 Excalibur at around 125. On my Redface SA I usually am in 3rd gear around 50. If I want a drier puddle I go to 4th and 10-20. The fine adjustment controls volts ( heat) in the puddle. For wetter puddle turn volts up, drier puddle turn it down and selecting a higher gear (coarse adjust).
