A Couple Solid Steel Supports

I made these supports for an overhang over a commercial buildings cellar entrance. I made them solid so they could be small, and so that as people load equipment or smash into them, they will not look like garbage.

The cement wall does not line up with the building, so I offset the posts and made them different heights so they are just laid into place and ready to go.

It did work out well. It was nice with the solid bar because it is plenty strong even with just half of it catching on the far post. This is after they are bolted in.

I had forgotten I also made that black rail on the ramp out of the old rail that was where the block wall was. I hate using painted scrap. I had cut that large grey angle for the mason, and when he set it, I quickly ran out took some measurements and made the mounts out of an I-beam cutoff. Because I had no time to prime and paint it, I made it so I could unbolt it and prime and paint it later. They are really strong. I also attached (welded) a piece of 1/2" threaded rod to the head of one of the bolts in the angle holding the rail. It acts like rebar holding the head of the bolt solid in the cement. It really made that rail very solid. Kind of comically solid. A lot of guys were laughing and pulling on it. I did not want to tie it to both walls, because it will expand and contract and the cement might not keep up with it. So I just tied it to the building up on top. But the other end is really solid too.

When the mason set the angle. He set it not only sloping downward which was expected. He also let it setup twisted so the vertical leg was out almost a half inch over four inches. That is why I made those mounts the way they are, to take up the large angle and still look like it is all cool and level.
