    3 Generation Headboard Birthday Benches

No welding involved but now that our eldest daughter has been given hers for her birthday yesterday I thought I'd post up the headboard benches I made for our girls. Our youngest daughter's birthday was in early January and she's had hers for a couple months now.

Judy and her older sister had these beds when they were little girls and our two had them when they were young and our youngest daughter's two girls had them after that. Eldest daughters two girls slept in them too when visiting their cousins so that counts too.

Last Thanksgiving they came back to Orange and were sitting in the garage. Judy said she didn't want them so I told her I had an idea for them and the results are below. The design changed slightly mid project on the first one when and I added the cross pipe in the back to act as a stop for storage bins that the bottom cross pipes are intended to support. I also added end "arm rests" on the second one to make it unique from the other besides just changing the upholstery material.

. . . showing the slightly different frame design.

Obviously one can't thread the 5 cross pipes into both end frames so I solved the problem by drilling out the threads in the T's/elbows and then drilled/pinned them on each end with rollpins. Unless you know they are there, you don't notice them once painted.

Back cushion backer boards were secured with 1/4-20 T-nuts/bolts and the bottom cushions with 1/2" pipe clamps and 5/8" long screws.

Nice job! I'm a sentimental guy so I really like it when you can take something that would've been tossed and use it for something else and it still holds good memories.

Thanks Bob. You're looking at $170 in pipe/fittings for the one with armrests and a little less for the one without. Then there's the plywood, foam padding and covering material. $$$

Thanks Mike. For sure. And only had to cut the two pieces for the armrest returns and re-thread. Everything else was standard off the shelf dimensions.

That's really something special, keeping the memories growing by repurposing.

Thanks 6Boys. I thought it would be quite appropriate considering their history.

Thanks Mike. Would have made something of them anyway but couldn't pass up doing them for birthday gifts.

Looks good. I'm a sentimental fool. My girls are using the beds my Mother made for my brother and I.

Seeing stuff like that makes my mind wander off into 'days gone by'. Odd how that works. It's not so much what was made but who, ya know? There's more into to those kind of things than the materials,,,,,, there's a little piece of you in each one.
