    Double gate latch ideas

I have a customer that we build a set of double gates for to secure a commercial lot. There will be a cane pole to steady the gate when their closed. However, I need to design a multi-point latch system that holds the gate secure even if someone lifts the cane. Does anyone have any design ideas/pictures for a slick system like this? Thanks

Unless both posts are contained 360 degrees, once the cane is pulled any latch is useless.

Normally, a chain is wrapped around the two posts, secured by a lock.

Keep in mind that "sufficient force to render the gates non-functional" is 1 sedan at 40mph. Security is relative.

I would do a drop bar but sideways, like a heavy duty slide bolt. This would actually hold the gates somewhat together if the drop bar was lifted, especially if you used 3/4 round.

Use a couple sections of 3/4 sch40 pipe the solid round will slide nicely inside,

I designed and built this for my double gate. It would be easy to add a padlock to it. This gate faces a sometimes harsh west wind and has survived 4 years so far.

Depending upon: the size, weight, and build of the gates - you can
have great fun with truck/trailer hardware.

How about a sliding gate lock?

I also love the bolts. They are very reliable. From the one side, it protects perfectly, and from the other, they look concise and cannot be played very beautifully. At the same time, I notice that we often forget to lock on it our gates. That's why I consider that it is better to have several systems o lock like https://www.howtobecomealocksmith.or...roof-padlocks/. In the afternoon, when someone at home, we lock the bolt. But for a night or when we leave and to the regular lock too. Unfortunately, we live in a troubled area, and we should take care of our safety.

    Re: Double gate latch ideas

A lot depends on how often the gate needs to be opened and closed.
Also take into consideration whether or not the gate will ever have an automatic opener.

You could make the cane bolt lockable. Maybe even a cane bold on both gates. And a latch near the top of the gate to keep it from flexing too much when the cane bolts are locked.

I've built a couple gates with a pedestrian gate to one side. It allows people through the gate and latching hardware is easy in that case.
You can keep the main gate closed except when vehicles need to go through.

If there is room, a sliding gate doesn't have the "cane bolt problem" Also simplifies adding an automatic opener -- you only need one instead of two openers.

yep, i did what i think ur talkin, and very simple. the horiz leg of the " angle iron" latch that pivots on one gate, blocks the thick long/tall canes from being lifted when vert leg is locked locked down in mating gates slot . when latch is opened/swiveld up, canes no longer blocked from being lifted . ill look if i got pics

You also might try this approach. To make it more secure, you could put heavy pipe in the ground for the rods to do down into. You could devise a padlock apparatus at the top so they couldn't be lifted up, if that's wanted.
